Ways To Engage

ALUMNI PRESENCE:  WAYS TO ENGAGE

Become a Class Representative

Classmates serve as one way of helping alumni maintain close ties to Kamehameha Schools and with each other.  Class representatives are the unsung heroes that lead and take responsibility for their classes.  A vital and important group, they work hand in hand with Alumni Relations to keep their classmates connected and involved with annual events such as Alumni Week at Kamehameha, Homecoming Game and activities, Annual Lei Draping of King Kamehameha Statue, Alumni Lū`au, Alumni Founder’s Day, and respective reunions and celebrations.

Get Involved as a Speaker

Volunteers are critical to the success of Kamehameha School Hawai`i’s many programs and events.  Alumni speakers may serve as representatives for college and careers for entering college freshmen to learn about respective college campuses through informal talk story sharing session(s) of personal experiences, anxieties, and positive feedback. KS alumni also return to campus and speak to students about different careers and professions and experiences in their respective fields.  Common topics:

·  Differences between high school and college

·  Unique issues facing island students on the U.S. mainland

·  Strategies for succeeding in college

·  The college social scene

·  Personal safety on campus

·  Choosing academic classes

·  Effective time management for studying

·  Year 2 and beyond Financial Aid and Scholarships

Home Away From Home: Support other KS alumni

Having a “Home Away From Home” helps our college students become acclimated to their new surroundings while embraced by an alumnus with Hawai`i and Kamehameha connections.  Alumni may support in ways they would want their ‘ohana to be cared for when far from home (e.g., transportation to or from the airport before or after the school year if needed, being part of their support system while away at college).  Alumni may also voluntarily reach out on weekends, after mid-terms and finals, or holidays when our college students are not able to return home to Hawai`i.
