alumni -vote-promo.mov

Dear Alumni of Kamehameha Schools,

Primary Election is on August 10th, thus, the ASKS executive board of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii is kindly sending out a kāhea to all civically engaged alumni to inspire

Hawai`i to make the decision to vote.

On August 9th, between 11:15 am - 12:15 pm, an inclusive, Native Hawaiian-led movement of `ōiwi, `ōpio, first-time or returning voters will stand together and wave signs “Vote! It’s Our Kuleana!” and “I Registered To Vote!”.

On August 9th, at 11:00 am, please join us at Hilo Bayfront to gather at the King Kamehameha Statue.  Your presence as an alumni not only gives back to your alma mater but also to our community. As an active alumni in society, you understand what the power of voice gives, so why not kāhea to it?

Please email tesarago@ksbe.edu to reserve your sign and spot with Aunty Terri Saragosa.

Mahalo a I mua Kamehameha,

Our future at Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi is a trajectory of your perseverance, conviction, and grit in the many pathways that you all journey upon.  As I reviewed the most recent issue of the I Mua magazine, I was ecstatic to see the many, many alumni members of our campus and the congratulatory that members have received for their individual accomplishments over the past few months.  Your progress and movement as individuals contribute to the collective lāhui of who we are as kanaka now and for our future here on this ʻāina and land across the globe where our alumni are.  I mahalo you for representing yourself, your ‘ohana, your community, our Aliʻi Pauahi, and our school under the grace of our Akua!

It is during this time that we are reminded of the value of giving – as it is not only about giving and receiving but rather giving, receiving, accepting, and giving back with the hope that this reciprocity of such actions strengthens our stance as kanaka.

Renewed by the blessings of faith, love, and hope, my prayers go out to all of you as you journey in the new year.  You will be forever part of Kamehameha Schools as well as a member of the uniqueness of your individual classes!

Me koʻu aloha palena ʻole me kēia wā Kalikimaka!

Aloha kākou e ko ke kula kiʻeki’e -

In April, I announced the progressive and extended movement of our kula kiʻekiʻe in search for a 2nd Vice Principal for our students and programs of our high school division.

It is my honor to announce that Mrs. Pua Kalaniopio has been selected for the Vice Principal position at Kula Kiʻekiʻe beginning the 2023-2024 school year.

A familiar individual to our kula kiʻekiʻe – Pua has served in different capacities at our Kamehameha Schools Hawai’i campus since 2002.  She entered as a Speech teacher and served briefly as the high school’s Student Activities Coordinator and High School Leadership Teacher.  As hoe wa’a is at the core of Pua and her 'ohana, she has served as our school’s head paddling coach in our athletic division.

As a school leader, Pua has served twice as an interim Vice Principal for the high school in 2011 and 2014.  She has led the summer school program for the high school as Program Administrator. For the last three years she has served as Vice Principal for our Kula Waena-Middle School.

When asked what she is most looking forward in her return to high school in the capacity of Vice Principal she says, "I am enthusiastic in reuniting with the high school faculty and staff. I especially look forward to continuing the journey of our kula in fostering and creating opportunities for our haumana and preparing our haumana to fulfill their purpose and kuleana for themselves, our lahui and the communities that they serve...now and for years to come.

We welcome Mrs. Pua Kalaniopio back to the high school!

Aloha!

Na'u ihola, na Kumu Lehua

Aloha kākou e ko ke kula kiʻekiʻe ---

It is my honor that I announce that Mr. Isaac Keoua Vigilla has been selected as Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Kula Kiʻekiʻe’s  Dean of Studies.

Mr. Vigilla is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi  class of 2007.  He earned his Bachelor’s of Psychology Degree from Stanford University and a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.  In May 2024, Mr. Vigilla will complete his Doctoral’s Degree (EdD) in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California where his dissertation centers on developing effective strategies to enhance the persistence of Native Hawaiian students in higher education.

A kanaka of Hawaiʻi Island, Mr. Vigilla is an experienced Native Hawaiian educational leader with 14 years of academic counseling and operations management experience in education.  Mr. Vigilla returns back home to our island with his wife, Darcy (Makanui-Souza) (KSH Class of 2006).  They return after nearly 10 years in California.  In California, Mr. Vigilla served as Senior Assistant Director at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism where he provided personalized academic counseling to over 350 undergraduate majors yearly addressing  degree requirements, educational goals, and personal development.  Mr. Vigilla is skilled in developing effective engagement strategies in promoting student well-being and success and expertise in advising, coaching, and training on academic skills. He was recognized in 2019 at USC Outstanding Advisor of the Year.  Mr. Vigilla also managed the remote/online process for 250+ students implementing innovative strategies and engaging virtual sessions as well as assisted in aligning academic standards and enhanced student outcomes in course curriculum while maintaining communication with all stakeholders.    Mr. Vigilla led the Annenberg Health and Wellness Task Force, spearheading data collection efforts to enhance student diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and wellness programming, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative metrics for informed decision-making.

When asked what he looks forward to the most returning back to Hawaiʻi and Kamehameha Schools and serving the students of Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi? He responds,  “Returning to Kamehameha Schools Hawai'i is an absolute dream for me. What excites me the most is the opportunity to work closely with our students, nurturing their 'Ōiwi Edge identity and helping them thrive. My lifelong passion has been to champion student success, particularly for Native Hawaiian students, and this role allows me to do just that. Drawing from my rich experiences from a decade at the University of Southern California, I'm eager to contribute to and elevate the support and success of our students here at Kamehameha. I see this not just as a job, but as my kuleana to Princess Pauahi and our beloved lāhui. I'm wholeheartedly committed to making a profound impact on their educational journeys. I MUA!”

Given the direction of our campus and our high school in ‘Ōiwi Edge Learning and Teaching, post-secondary matriculation and persistency,  HS program design to meet the needs of our students today, and building ‘ōiwi leadership opportunities for our students for their futures and the future of our lāhui, I welcome Mr. Vigilla to the high school’s faculty and staff and to our HS’ administration team.

Mr. Vigilla will serve as Dean of Studies a position previously held by Dr. Clint Anderson who now serves as an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.

Mr. Vigilla will start officially in his capacity as our high school’s Dean of Studies on October 9, 2023.

Welina mai e Mr. Vigilla!

KUMU'S MESSAGE for the 23-24 SCHOOL YEAR

Aloha kākou e Nā Moʻopuna a Kamehameha, Nā Pua a Pauahi -

I hope this message finds all of our alumni well and in a space of pono and aloha!  Aloha nui kākou e nā moʻopuna a Kamehameha, nā pua a Pauahi.

The 2023-2024 school year is well on its way as we welcomed back 570 haumāna of our Kula Kiʻekiʻe!  It’s a year that will be filled with memories and aloha for our haumāna that they are able to look back on while on their own journeys to and through graduation from Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi!

The Alumni Presence is very much alive!  As I coined “Alumni Presence” back in 2017, the Alumni Presence is an open portal for our alumni to remain connected to this school, and their campus.  This ALUMNI PRESENCE website has been created just for you.  With this in mind, high school positions have been created to continue to strengthen the foundational existence of our alumni as part of their school.  In addition to Aunty Terri Lyn Saragosa as our Alumni and ‘Ohana Presence Coordinator, Ms. Zoe Leonard (KSH c/o 2015) and Calista-Rae Makana Campbell (KSH c/o 2017) serve as our Higher Education Transition Specialists that help to transition and guide our graduates and alumni members in the post-secondary arena.

We welcome the following members as part of our high school faculty:

I send my aloha and mahalo out to you all for continuing the legacy of Pauahi as ‘ōiwi leaders of our present and our future.  My blessed prayers go out to you all!

Me ko’u aloha nui iā ‘oukou pākahi a pau!

Naʻu ihola, na Kumu Lehua

Aloha e nā pua a Pauahi!  Welcome to our new Alumni Website!

As your ʻOhana and Alumni Presence Coordinator for KSH Kula Ki'eki'e, I am your liaison with campus. I look forward to connecting with you.

Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to kōkua with various alumni events.
