Students reflect on their accumulated knowledge of kalo in cultural connections and traditional use of the plant form.

They reflect on their connection and identity as Hawaiians to answer - Who are you? What is your self identity?

Maui Captures the sun -

Haumana compares and contrast stories of Maui using Hawaiian and Maori moʻolelo.

Using digital drawings created in "Drawing Pad" app on their ipad, students develop background and illustrative skills.

Inspired by the story of "Maui Catches the Sun" - Haumana create a circular weave of their Sun.

Inspired by the story of Maui and his quest to slow the sun, haumana are inspired to create a circle weave with a painted pattern background.

Color - Waihoʻoluʻu

Tints and Shades - ʻAikalima / Ice Cream Project

Colors are explored with primary and secondary hues:

  • How does one make colors lighter with pigment paint?
  • How does one make colors darker with pigment paint?

What a fun way to explore creating a tint and shade example using ice cream as the imagery.

Warm / Cool Tones - Nā Waiho'oulu - Initial Letter Reveal

Letter Reveal

Students create a study of warm and cool tones using watercolor and a masking technique. The beautiful "reveal" becomes evident when masking is removed. The image is then used as the cover for our Art Portfolio.

"All about me" Project

Haumana create their self portraits incorporating the use of linear line patterns, line repetition and balance. Watercolor studies using warm and cool color application of washes to create contrast to their photo images. Students explore personal reflections of self identity and personal interests in this photo montage.
