Hauʻoli Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi! This is our last week of Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and Kumu Brittney , Kumu Kalauʻihilani and I have two new Papa Hōʻikeʻike, He Aha Kēia? and E Kuhikuhi Mai!, for us to practice our ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi.
Haumana from grades 5 & 6 signed up for a Pahana ʻIʻini (Passion Project) with Kumu Kawahine. The study of cultural designs and patterns of Polynesia. They practiced and created their original designs to make DIY stickers using packing tape and book tape.
Hulō! Week 2 of Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi is here and we have two new murals for interactive practice , Papa Hōʻikeʻike ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, Pehea ke anilā? and Nā Māhele o Ke Kino.
Haumana look at artworks of Keith Haring...and create their images celebrating Lā Kuʻokoʻa. Grade 2 drew initial imagery and painted the foundational colors. Grade 1 added color blend and expressive marks...while Papa Mālaaʻo made their handprints on the Hae Hawaiʻi.
Haumana respond to their lessons on the Hae Hawaiʻi with their "fortune teller / chatterbox origami"
On Wednesdays through the month of November, Kumu Cramer, Ceislak and Kahue's classes learned about the moʻolelo of our Hae Hawaiʻi. Then, each haumāna created individual pieces representing their connection and understanding of the symbols about the hae Hawaiʻi. Pieces were assigned, "predominatly red, white, or blue" -- and then assembled as the stripes in this hae NUI! It hung off the bridge on Nov. 27 when our campus celebrated Lā Kūʻokoʻa.
Kumu Aweau's class is jumping in to aloha ʻāina in all kinds of ways! Art collaborations include learning about found-object art and a microplastics beach cleanup. What will we make with these small found mosaics? Stay tuned...
Haumana from Grades K,1 & 2 remember and pay tribute to Pauahi with a mural. Teachers and students use this mural as a touchstone to remember Pauahiʻs legacy and Breast Cancer Awareness in this month of October.
What wonderful extentions occurred in classrooms
Haumana celebrated Dot Day by creating numerous fanciful dots on our first "Interactive Mural for 2019-2020" year.
They created dots in "free time" and recess time to add to the mural daily. What joy!
