Welcome to the Bearden Elementary School Mathematics showcase! This space is dedicated to highlighting the problem-solving skills, creativity, and accomplishments of our K-5 students as they master the Tennessee state standards in math. Through engaging projects, hands-on activities, and student work samples, you’ll see how our young mathematicians are building a strong foundation in mathematical thinking. Using Shapes

Kindergarten students are exploring the world of shapes as part of Tennessee's Math Standards. They are learning to identify, name, and describe common 2D shapes like circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and hexagons, as well as 3D shapes such as spheres, cubes, cones, and cylinders. These foundational skills help children recognize shapes in their environment and understand their unique attributes.

A creative classroom activity involves using these shapes to build people. Students combine circles for heads, rectangles for bodies, and triangles or squares for arms and legs, discovering how simple shapes can come together to form more complex figures. This hands-on approach encourages creativity and helps students see the connection between geometric concepts and real-world objects.

People

While building their shape people, students also practice describing the positions of shapes using terms like above, below, beside, in front of, behind, between, and next to. They sort shapes based on their attributes and experiment with combining shapes to create new ones. These engaging activities reinforce important math concepts and support the development of spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Mulitplication Time

Bearden Elementary School’s 3rd grade students launched their multiplication unit with a hands-on kickoff lesson that connected directly to Tennessee math standards. During the activity, students worked with “flower orders” to model equal groups and explore how repeated addition leads to multiplication. By arranging flowers into sets and calculating the total number in each order, students practiced forming equal groups, identifying patterns, and finding the product. This engaging, real-world scenario helped students build a strong conceptual foundation for multiplication while encouraging problem-solving, collaboration, and mathematical reasoning. The lesson provided a meaningful introduction to understanding multiplication as both grouping and repeated addition.

Communitive Properties

Second grade students are actively working on Tennessee state standards for Math by exploring the commutative property. They are learning that numbers can be added in any order and the sum will remain the same, such as 4 + 3 = 3 + 4. Through hands-on activities and practice problems, students are building a strong understanding of how the commutative property helps make addition easier and more flexible.

Multiplication

Third grade students are working on Tennessee state standards for Math by building multiplication fact fluency. They are practicing quick recall of basic multiplication facts through games, timed activities, and problem-solving exercises. This focus helps students develop confidence and accuracy, laying a strong foundation for more advanced math concepts. Several of our 3rd Grades have already achieved full scoops and have become multiplication masters!

Area & Cheez-its

Third graders at Bearden Elementary kicked off their Area unit by exploring Tennessee's state math standards in a fun, hands-on way. Students learned how to measure area by covering rectangles with unit squares—using Cheez-Its as their measuring tools! Through this engaging activity, they discovered how counting equal-sized squares helps determine the location of different shapes. The lesson combined math, creativity, and a little snack-time fun to make learning about area both meaningful and memorable.

GingerBread Coin Houses

Bearden Elementary second graders meet Tennessee State Math standards by applying their understanding of money, addition, and problem-solving to real-world situations. In their “Gingerbread House with Coins” project, students use coins to decorate their houses, identify each coin’s value, and calculate the total amount spent on decorations. They demonstrate fluency in adding and comparing amounts of money, as well as reasoning about combinations of coins that make the exact total. This engaging activity supports mastery of grade-level standards in operations, number sense, and financial literacy while connecting math learning to a creative, hands-on experience.

100th Day of School

Our kindergarteners at Bearden Elementary celebrated the 100th day of school in style! Students practiced counting to 100 through engaging, hands-on math activities aligned with Tennessee math standards for number sense and counting. To make the day extra special, they dressed up as 100-year-old versions of themselves—complete with canes, glasses, and gray hair! This milestone day combined learning and laughter as students demonstrated how much they’ve grown over 100 days of school.

Math Problems

Get ready to think, solve, and have fun with math! On this site, 4th graders create and solve math problems that match Tennessee state standards. Practice your skills, challenge your classmates, and show what you know as you master multiplication, fractions, geometry, and more. Every problem you solve brings you one step closer to becoming a true Math Master!

Math Fact Mastery

First graders are growing their math skills one problem at a time! After practicing their addition facts, students brought their learning to life with colorful “math fact flowers.” Each petal and leaf bloomed with correct answers, showing how bright and beautiful math mastery can be!

MEasuring it Out

Step into our 2nd-grade classroom where math meets modern art! Our young mathematicians have been busy exploring the Tennessee State Standards for Measurement, specifically focusing on measuring length using standard units such as inches and centimeters.

In this "Measure It!" project, students used colorful paper strips to create unique geometric collages. After building their designs, they took on the role of precision investigators by:

Estimating and measuring the exact length of each colored strip.
Recording their data clearly on index cards, documenting the length of every blue, red, green, orange, and yellow piece.
Comparing lengths to see which colors were the longest and shortest in their creations.

By turning abstract numbers into tangible, vibrant art, our students are mastering the ability to use tools properly and understand the relationship between different units of measurement. Come see how we make math come alive!

Great Graphs & Data Detectives! 📊📈

Our 3rd-grade data detectives are visualizing information like pros! Working to master Tennessee State Math Standards for data representation, students surveyed their classmates to uncover the most popular choices for recess activities, field trips, sports, and even fast food. They then used those numbers to bring their data to life by designing and drawing their own bar graphs and pictographs. A major focus of this math project was understanding scale; students carefully constructed custom keys in which a single drawn symbol—such as a star, a flower, or a square—represented multiple votes. By organizing, graphing, and interpreting this real-world information, our young mathematicians are proving that their charting skills are completely off the charts!

Building Big Numbers!

Our 3rd-grade mathematicians are digging deep into the structure of numbers! In this unit, students are mastering the ability to read, write, and manipulate numbers within the thousands. By breaking numbers down into their component parts—thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones—students are developing a strong "number sense" that serves as the foundation for all complex math to come. Whether they are representing values using base-ten blocks, expanded form, or word form, these students are proving that they truly understand the power of every digit's place!
