Welcome to our Bearden Elementary School English Language Arts showcase! Here, we celebrate the creativity, growth, and achievements of our K-5 students as they master the Tennessee state standards. Through a variety of writing samples, projects, and reading activities, this website highlights the hard work and progress of our young learners. We invite you to explore and enjoy the impressive work our students have created as they develop their skills and confidence in English Language Arts.

Working on improving sentence structure with an uppercase letter at the start of the sentence, a complete idea, and a punctuation mark at the end. Also improving handwriting as students continue to practice, practice, and practice!

Using Text Evidence

4th Graders are working to use text evidence in their writing. This helps them to have evidence to support claims they make in their written responses. You can help your students by asking them questions about what they are reading, and support their responses by going back into the text and identifying important details to support their claims.

Writing About Animal Adaptations

Third grade students showcased their understanding of animal adaptations through a creative culminating activity. Each student designed an original animal and wrote an informative text explaining how their animal adapts to its environment. This project integrated science concepts with English Language Arts, aligning with Tennessee state standards for informative writing and research. The display highlights students’ ability to explain adaptation strategies, use domain-specific vocabulary, and organize their writing clearly, demonstrating both scientific knowledge and strong literacy skills.

Fourth-grade students are meeting the Tennessee State Standards for English Language Arts by engaging with a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and informational passages. Through these reading experiences, they are developing the ability to identify key ideas, determine important details, and distinguish between main points and supporting evidence. Students practice summarizing by condensing information into clear, concise statements that capture the central message of the text. This process strengthens comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills, ensuring that students not only understand what they read but can also explain it effectively in their own words.

Corn is a “super resource” due to its numerous uses in food, fuel, and various products, making it an engaging topic for 5th-grade ELA. Students read informational texts about corn’s history, cultural significance, and modern applications, then analyze the main ideas and details. They write opinion, explanatory, and narrative pieces connected to corn, while also practicing vocabulary and grammar. Through discussions and presentations, students develop their speaking and listening skills as they explore the impact of corn on communities, the environment, and daily life, connecting literacy learning to real-world topics.

Riddle Me This

First graders at Bearden Elementary School practiced their English Language Arts skills by creating riddles and illustrations focused on mastering l-blend words. As part of the Tennessee state standards, students used creativity and critical thinking to write riddles that challenged their classmates to guess words containing blends such as “bl,” “cl,” “fl,” and “sl.” To support their writing, they drew colorful pictures that provided visual clues to the answers. This engaging activity combined literacy development with artistic expression, helping students strengthen vocabulary, spelling, and comprehension while making learning fun and interactive.

Character BookShelf

Fifth-grade students are working on the Tennessee state standards for English Language Arts by focusing on character traits. They are learning to identify and describe the qualities, motivations, and actions of characters in stories. Through reading, discussion, and writing activities, students are developing skills to analyze how character traits influence the plot and relationships within a text.

The Resilience RoadMap

In second grade at Bearden Elementary, students are learning how to describe what characters are like and how they face challenges in stories. They read books and talk about the characters’ feelings, actions, and choices. Then, they write about how those characters solve problems or show courage, kindness, or determination. This helps students understand stories better and become stronger readers and writers.

4th Grade Dramas

Fourth-grade students at Bearden Elementary School are exploring dramas and themes as part of their English Language Arts curriculum. Through reading and performing plays, students learn how characters, settings, and dialogue work together to tell a story. They identify the main theme, or message, that the author wants to share and discuss how it is shown through the characters’ actions and words. By writing and performing short scenes, students practice reading fluently, understanding story structure, and expressing ideas creatively. This work helps them build strong comprehension and communication skills while enjoying the art of storytelling.

Describing Our Drawings

Kindergarteners at Bearden Elementary School are busy building their ELA skills by describing their drawings and writing complete sentences. They use their creativity to tell stories about their pictures, adding details and using words that show what they see and imagine. Build-A-Bill of Rights

Our fifth graders at BES are combining reading, writing, and critical thinking skills to create their own ELA Bill of Rights. After studying the structure and purpose of the original Bill of Rights, students are writing their own versions to reflect the rights and responsibilities of readers and writers in the classroom. This project helps them strengthen their understanding of persuasive writing, collaboration, and the power of words.

Our first graders at BES have been learning how technology helps make our lives easier. As part of their unit, students explored different types of technology and discussed how inventions solve everyday problems. To apply what they learned, each student designed and described their own robot to help with a daily task. This creative project encouraged problem-solving, imagination, and an understanding of how technology supports our world.

Our fourth graders at BES are using their ELA standards to express what they are thankful for. Through brainstorming, drafting, and revising, students are writing thoughtful pieces that reflect appreciation for people, experiences, and moments in their lives. Bearden Elementary School’s 1st graders are putting their ELA skills into action by writing all about reindeer! Students are using what they’ve learned about sentence structure, descriptive words, and organization to create fun and informative pieces. This engaging writing activity helps young learners connect reading and writing skills as they explore a winter-themed topic. Our 1st graders are proud to share their creativity and growing confidence as writers!

Applying to be An Elf

Bearden Elementary first graders meet Tennessee State ELA standards for informational writing by clearly sharing facts and details about a topic. In their “Elf for Santa” job application project, students write organized informational texts that explain why they are good helpers for Santa. They use complete sentences, topic sentences, and supporting details to describe their skills, such as wrapping gifts, spreading cheer, and working as a team. Their writing shows growing command of vocabulary, conventions, and structure appropriate for first grade, demonstrating both creativity and understanding of informational text features.

Moral &

Bearden Elementary second graders meet Tennessee State ELA standards by identifying and explaining the central message, theme, or moral in stories. Through their “Theme and Moral Posters” project, students demonstrate comprehension by illustrating and writing about the lessons characters learn in a text.

They use evidence from the story to support their ideas and express them clearly through both words and visuals. 2nd Grade

Bearden Elementary 2nd graders practiced seeing the world through different points of view as they explored the concept of perspective in reading and writing. Through stories, discussions, and creative projects, students learned how characters can experience the same event in unique ways.

Bearden Elementary 3rd graders explore the concept of perspective through creative storytelling. Each student writes and illustrates two comic strips that tell the same story from different points of view. This engaging project helps students understand how perspective shapes narrative, deepening their comprehension and empathy as writers and readers.

Our 1st graders are learning to express big ideas through writing! Our 2nd-grade authors are taking the writing world by storm! Working towards the Tennessee State ELA Standards, students are practicing writing clear, informative texts by explaining complex scientific processes. After reviewing a reading passage and a scientific diagram about extreme weather, students synthesized the facts to write their own step-by-step explanations of how tornadoes form.
