Throughout the unit, the driving concept of 'innovation' underpinned the student's design thinking. Innovation is crucial for design as it drives progress, enables problem-solving, and allows for the creation of new and improved solutions. By embracing innovation, our Urban Designers explored current sustainability initiatives and found unique ways to address the needs of a growing population, whilst promoting long-term environmental health. The students' learnt that innovation enables designers to stay ahead of evolving needs and expectations, ensuring their creations remain relevant and impactful in an ever-changing world.
The concept of 'design' was closely considered in the creation of the students' liveable city. Design encompasses the thoughtful and intentional shaping of cities, towns, and public spaces to enhance the quality of life for its residents. It goes beyond mere aesthetics, considering factors such as functionality, connectivity, sustainability, and social equity. Our Urban Designers endeavoured to create a harmonious and inclusive environment that facilitated efficient movement, fostered a sense of community, and promoted public health and well-being. The boys were guided by the Sustainable Development Goals, along with the Global Liveability Index, to integrate elements such as thoughtful land use, transportation systems and architecture to enrich the lives of their citizens.
Inclusion played an integral role in developing students' conceptual understanding. Learners understood that inclusion is a vital aspect of design as it ensures the needs, perspectives, and experiences of diverse individuals and communities are recognised, valued, and integrated into the design process. By embracing inclusion, our Urban Designs created spaces, products, and services that are accessible, equitable, and meaningful to a wide range of people. They considered ways to promote social cohesion and foster a sense of belonging for all individuals regardless of their age, ability, background, or identity.
