The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction defines disciplinary literacy as “The confluence of content knowledge, experiences, and skills merged with the ability to read, write, listen, speak, think critically, and perform in a way that is meaningful within the context of a given field.” In this section we will explore how we can help our students read, write and speak like scientists as they are learning the content of our science courses to prepare them for success in future science education and STEM fields and to be informed consumers and citizens so they can understand and tackle the questions, challenges and crises of the 21st century and beyond.
