What an inspiring way to start the week! This past Monday, September 22nd, our Library was buzzing with excitement as we welcomed very special guests from the South China Morning Post: Ms. Emily Tsang, Editor of Young Post and Posties, and Ms. Ruchi Shah, Production Editor for Posties.
They spent the afternoon sharing their professional expertise and passion for journalism with our eager Year 5 and Year 6 students, who are all keen writers and regular contributors to Posties.
Our Year 5 session (1:15–2:00 PM) was filled with curiosity about what happens behind the scenes at a real newspaper. Our students were especially eager to learn how articles are selected for Posties and the process of creating engaging content. They discovered the secrets to making an article stand out, from choosing fun topics and writing catchy first lines to the importance of fact-checking.
For our Year 6 students (2:00–2:45 PM), the session was a fantastic opportunity to hone a key journalistic skill: interviewing. As our senior students in their final year of primary school, they are highly motivated to gather information powerfully and respectfully. They learned valuable tips on being "Super Listeners," asking follow-up questions, and making their interviewees feel comfortable. A highlight was "The Interview Game," where brave volunteers stepped into the roles of a journalist hunting for a scoop and a star interviewee with secret info!
To help our students reflect and apply their new knowledge, they used specially prepared slides after the session. This will undoubtedly strengthen their future submissions to Posties.
A huge thank you to Ms. Emily and Ms. Ruchi for their engaging and insightful presentations. The KJS community is so grateful for your time and for inspiring the next generation of writers and reporters!
Do you have more questions?
Students who have further questions for Ms. Emily or Ms. Ruchi about SCMP Posties, writing, or being a journalist are encouraged to share them on our dedicated Padlet. Please remember to include your name and class!
