Aims of the Course

The aims of the course are to increase the mathematical skills of the individual and to enable them to apply their skills when solving a variety of problems.

The aims are to enable students to:

develop an understanding of mathematical principles, concepts and methods
develop a feel for number
apply mathematics in everyday situations
analyse and solve problems, present the solutions clearly, and check and interpret the results
develop an ability to apply mathematics in other subjects, particularly science and technology
develop the ability to reason logically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions
appreciate patterns and relationships in mathematics and make generalisations
appreciate the interdependence of different areas of mathematics

How is the course examined?

All students start on Extended Tier but may be moved to Core Tier in year 11 based on their progress.

Each tier has two Examination Papers:

Career Pathways

You will need at least grade B (ideally higher) in order to do A level Maths. A strong IGCSE in Mathematics is also desired for other A level subjects such as Sciences and Technology.

You will need a passing grade of C in Mathematics as part of entry requirement into most 6th forms, colleges and universities.

Entry Requirements

This is a compulsory subject for all students. In order to successfully access the course you will need to have foundations in non calculator numeracy (multiplication tables, number bonds, decimals, fractions) and algebra (solving equations, substitution, simplifying).
