Aims of the Course

Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design encourages a range of skills, stimulates aesthetic awareness, knowledge, and critical understanding of art, and provides opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills. A personal and independent perspective is encouraged at all times. The syllabus is designed to accommodate a wide range of abilities, materials, and resources.

The syllabus is designed for learners who wish to explore practical work through a range of two- and/or three-dimensional processes and includes new media and technologies in addition to traditional media and processes.

The IGCSE Art & Design course aims to develop:

Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design has been designed to offer a broad choice of media and approaches so that candidates can produce a personal response and schools can play to their strengths in terms of staff expertise and interests.

how is the course examined?

There are two components for the examination.

50% of the course is coursework which is started in year 10 and must be continued during the summer holiday between year 10 and 11.

Cambridge International IGCSE Art and Design provides a foundation for the study of:

To excel in IGCSE Art & Design, students should have foundational skills in artistic mediums such as drawing and painting, and an eagerness to explore creative expression. A significant commitment to coursework outside of lessons is essential, as students are expected to continually refine their skills, experiment with materials, and develop their ideas independently. They should have a good understanding of basic elements of art and design principles, such as form, colour, texture, space, contrast, unity and composition, and be willing to engage in self-directed work and critical reflection. Curiosity, a proactive approach to experimenting with different techniques, and the confidence to convey personal interpretations are key qualities for success in this course.
