Aims of the Course

Cambridge IGCSE First Language English allows learners to develop the ability to:

communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing
learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed.

The course aims to enable students to:

read a wide range of texts, fluently and with good understanding
read critically, and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing
write accurately and effectively
work with information and with ideas in language
listen to, understand, and use spoken language effectively

Details of the course

Cambridge IGCSE First Language English offers candidates the opportunity to respond with understanding to a rich array of reading texts during the course as a whole. Candidates will use these texts to inform and inspire their own writing, and write in a range of text types for different purposes and audiences.

Candidates are encouraged to become appreciative and critical readers, writers, speakers and listeners.

How is the course examined?

Students should ideally have a solid foundation in basic English grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. They should be able to read and understand a variety of texts and express their ideas clearly in writing. Proficiency in forming structured sentences, developing coherent paragraphs, and grasping the main ideas and details in reading passages will be essential. Additionally, students should be able to analyze language and communicate their thoughts with clarity, demonstrating both creativity and critical thinking in their writing.
