Children in 5th class designed and made their own marble runs or mazes using common materials, cardboard, lollipop sticks, paper plates, masking tape etc.
Session 1 was looking at possible designs, testing materials and completing an inventory of materials to collect.
Session 2: The children constructed their marble runs.
Design a tower!
Fourth Class had to design a tower to hold a basketball using only newspaper and masking tape.
Medieval Castles!
We designed Medieval castles using play doh and tooth picks and match sticks. Children had to include features such a draw bridge, moat, keep, portcullis, and bailey.
Local Monuments!
Children in Fifth Class looked at some local monuments and the re-created them in class!
Design and Make
3rd Class were learning about Setanta. They had to design an object (other than a hurl) to get the sliotar into the greyhounds mouth. They designed objects, labelled them, discussed the materials they would use and explained how they worked. They then made catapults using lollipop sticks and a plastic spoon.
Design and make a bridge
5th Class had to design and make a bridge using available materials - cotton buds, lollipop sticks, pipe cleaners, tape, string and straws.
Build the tallest tower!
Second Class were given some small marshmallows, large marshmallows and some spaghetti. The had to build the tallest tower they could.
Making, designing and constructing Gingerbread Houses!
3rd class actively engaged in the planning, designing and making of Gingerbread Houses. They drew out a design and plan of the house and used that in their construction! This was an excellent cross circular activity the children loved.
Building a paper structure
Fourth Class had to create a paper structure at least 15cm high. It needed to hold 3 Alex Ryder novels for at least 20 seconds.
They could only use newspaper and tape. They needed to create a very strong foundation.
Design a catapult!
Fifth Class were challenged to design a catapult using only lollipop sticks, 4 rubber bands and 1 plastic spoon.
Lego Robots
3rd class worked in pairs and made robots using Lego. They enjoyed constructing and building different models.
Build the Tallest Structure!
During Engineering Week Second Class had a competition to see who could build the tallest structure using a variety of materials; cardboard rolls, porridge cups, lollipop sticks and bulldog clips and 2D shapes.
Rebuild the tower!
Children had to rebuild a tower of cups without touching the cups with their hands. They were given a selection of materials including paperclips, rubber bands, bulldog clips, pipe cleaners, straws etc.

Second Class children had the opportunity to create marble runs. They loved it!

Lego Challenge Cards!
Make a paper chain
Sixth Class had to make the longest paper chain they could from one sheet of A4 paper!
Bridges!
Children from "Seoda" learned all about bridges and then constructed a draw bridge!
First Class enjoyed the challenge of building a bridge between two islands with Lego.
First and Second Class worked in small groups to create bridges with Lego. We discovered that the longer the bridge, the more it weighs, the more it carries, and the bigger the risk it'll collapse. Our bridges used supports at the sides and in the middle.
Rockets!
Junior Infants were busy making rockets using 2D shapes.
