St. Joseph’s National School, Kinvara, Co. Galway were shortlisted and went on to win the START Trophy 2018. Now in its third year, the Schools Teaching Awareness of Randomised Trials (START) competition aims to educate students about why we need randomised trials to improve healthcare nationally and globally. Their trial title was: The effect of fidgeting on concentration. The pupils noticed that some students fidget a lot when listening. They investigated the effect this had on their concentration by comparing concentration scores between the control group, who sat with their arms crossed, and the test group, who had blu-tack to fidget with, whilst listening to their teacher.

The purpose of the Living Science workshops is to educate and inform primary school students of the importance of protecting our environment with regards to protection of water quality and biodiversity (flora and fauna),how they impact upon the environment and vise-versa how the environment impacts upon local communities. Thus by creating environmental awareness through hands on workshops.

The Exploration Dome came to visit us at school. We learned all about space, the barrier reef! It was so exciting to be in the dome!

As part of Science Week 2018 6th Class attended an interactive workshop hosted by Transition Year students from Seamount College. Pupils had a fantastic opportunity to carry out many hands on experiments under the watchful eyes of the TY students.

Experiments carried out covered areas such as air pressure, electrical circuits, ph scale, oxygen, separating substances, investigating food components and looking at cells under a microscope.

To celebrate Science week Junior and Senior Infants came together to take part in some science experiments.

We did the Dancing Raisins and exploding foam experiments, and made slime. Luckily, we didn't all turn green with the exploding foam as some predictions were told!

6th Class pupils participated in an intriguing workshop run by Ryan McAuley in which they learned about light theory, fluorescence and created holographic images.

A very practical active workshop allowed the pupils to explore the effect of UV light on different materials, concurrent to this pupils in small groups created holographic images in a make shift dark room created in the school for this event.
