As the Beatles once sang, “You say you want the Revolution, well you know, we’d all love to see the plan.” Heed the taunt that lyric contains. It is the fatal flaw of those who would be change agents for good to imagine that nobility of purpose is enough. It isn’t. Bringing about change is a craft, one called politics, politics in the entrepreneurial sense, persuading people to see the opportunity you see, to accept your vision and to act upon it. People, when they approach politics, like the assurance of formulas. But this session will not offer any. Politics is an art and this will be artistic training, recognizing that, as in all arts, success goes to those who develop an eye, an ear, and the temperament for the process and the recognition of what is going on, not the least with themselves. Using as illustrations the session leader’s experience in high stakes environmental issues, from creating the Catskill watershed program to stopping shale gas fracking in New York State, this session will explore how to hone one's own internal political eye, ear, and temperament to become the successful political artist one's vision will need.
