Nandini Mehrotra has been passionate conservation about since she was 9 and engaged with the space ever since in varying forms from including education, advocacy, research and project implementation. She currently works as Program Manager at Technology for Wildlife Foundation which focuses on using spatial technology to amplify conservation impact. She leads program strategy and implementation while also overseeing applied research projects. She studied Environmental Policy from Cornell University and her interests lie in understanding and creating inclusive and scientifically-sound conservation projects and eventually environmental governance.
To urgently address the linked biological and climate crises, we are looking at conservation solutions that address both. Mangroves are a well-recognised choice for this-as major carbon sinks and nurseries of estuarine biodiversity. Yet, we continue to see their destruction at a rate even higher than terrestrial forests. Despite legal mandates, they continue to be cut because of the financial burden they present to landowners. We want to address this problem by providing financial incentives to landowners to conserve or restore mangroves on their land. We want to do so by engaging in and creating markets for their ecosystem services.
