Assignments & Reflections
A 3-credit Field Period requires a total of 140-hours to be completed — 120+ of those hours will be with your site, and the remaining 20 hours will go towards your Field Period preparation and reflective assignments. Reflection is a critical component of the overall experience and your learning, so be sure to dedicate ample time to these assignments.
Field Period grades are typically due about four weeks into the fall and spring semesters following a January or summer experience so that faculty evaluators have time to review everything and meet with their Field Period students; however, this does not mean wait until the last minute to complete and submit these assignments. Some faculty will create their own deadlines for you to submit your assignments and present on your experiences, but it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure everything is completed before grades are due.
Below is a quick glance at what is due as part of your Field Period course but be sure to check out the sub-tabs for additional details on each assignment:
What is due to your faculty advisor/evaluator
Reflective Journal — typically written daily during the experience and focused on your learning. (OT students are given a template and major-specific guidelines available in the Major-Specific Materials tab in the Field Period Resources website.)
Summary and Critical Reflection Paper — typically 3-5 pages summarizing the experience, what you learned, and how you plan to use that learning going forward (OT, SW & ED students are given major-specific guidelines available on the Program-Specific Information page.)
Unique Documentation — how you will showcase what you did and learned when you present on your Field Period. Ex: PowerPoint, Prezi, brochure, handout, video, etc.
Presentation/Discussion — share your unique documentation with your advisor and focus on what you learned from this experience/did you achieve your measurable learning objectives.
Students are to submit their assignments through an E-Portfolio.
Also, be sure to take a look at the reflective assignments that other students submitted in their e-portfolios:
