Our Kindergarten math program follows the Eureka Math units of study:
Kindergartners blend their learning within these content areas with the ability to apply that knowledge to solve problems, communicate math ideas, justify solutions, model math concepts, and reason to make sense of mathematics. These math practices standards are a key component of our math program within each of the units of study.
Students use numbers to represent quantities and to solve problems. In order to accomplish this, students learn number names and the counting sequence. We learn to count to 100 by tens and by ones. Students count sets of objects and compare numbers and groups of items. Students work with addition and subtraction to learn that addition is putting together and subtraction is taking apart. We learn how to read simple addition and subtraction equations in Kindergarten. Students will work with numbers 11-20 to gain foundations for place value. Students apply effective strategies to answer quantitative questions.
In geometry students learn to describe their physical world using geometric ideas and vocabulary. We learn to identify and describe 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes. Students also analyze, compare, and create shapes.
