Metadata Application Profile Project

LIS 60637 (Fall 2021)
This project represents the culmination and practical application of the skills and knowledge I built during the Metadata Architecture and Implementation course. The goal of the project was to develop a metadata application profile that may be used to describe a chosen collection of information objects. Creating such a tool required not only detailed analysis of the specific collection and its unique characteristics, but also current and future user needs in order to optimize access to the collection. The final product is a detailed element set with full specification of usage, including instructions and best practices for metadata record creation.
This project is a good example of my program’s first learning outcome:
“Apply the field’s functional theories, principles, values, ethics and skills to everyday practice.”
The project relates to all of the ALA core competencies listed in the category of “Organization of Recorded Knowledge and Information.”
More specifically, this project also demonstrates several items from ALCTS’s Core Competencies for Cataloging and Metadata Professional Librarians, including the following:
“Understands data standardization” (particularly “Structure standards” and “Value Standards), and
“Understands methods and approaches for metadata creation, editing, analysis, and transformation.”
