A Knowledge Organization System for the Online Google Doodle Archive
LIS 60636 (Spring 2021)
As specified in the assignment instructions, the objective of this project was “to improve the findability of the Google doodles by supporting effective searching and browsing of the Google Doodles Archive (GDA) collection.” While considering current and future user needs, the project involved applying knowledge of faceted searching, taxonomies, pick lists, synonym rings, and other knowledge organization tools to achieve this objective. The project fulfills my program’s first learning outcome:
“Apply the field’s functional theories, principles, values, ethics and skills to everyday practice.”
It also illustrates my knowledge and abilities in the ALA’s third area of core competencies for librarians, “Organization of Recorded Knowledge and Information,” which includes:
· The principles involved in the organization and representation of recorded knowledge and information.
· The developmental, descriptive, and evaluative skills needed to organize recorded knowledge and information resources.
· The systems of cataloging, metadata, indexing, and classification standards and methods used to organize recorded knowledge and information.
