edTPA Guidelines require strict confidentiality for your video clips. You may not publicly post them on the web, however, the method suggested below has been presented to edTPA staff and is acceptable so long as the procedures are followed precisely.
YouTube Studio can be used to trim your raw video into your video clip. During the upload/download process, YouTube automatically compresses the video file to a small size. Additionally, while you can upload a variety of file formats to YouTube, all files will be in the preferred .mp4 file format when downloaded from YouTube.
The most important thing to remember throughout this process is that from upload to download, your videos must always be marked private.
First, upload your video to YouTube from a computer-
- Go to www.YouTube.com
- If not already logged in, log in to your account.
- You may have to use a personal account.
- Click video camera with plus sign icon in the top right corner
- Select "Upload video."
- IMMEDIATELY change the toggle to private.
- Click “Select files to upload” and locate the video file on your computer or device.
- Allow the video file to upload.
To upload to YouTube from a mobile device (iPhone/iPad and Android are very similar once in the YouTube app), check out this video- https://youtu.be/EStvLV8ACMI
Using YouTube Studio to trim and compress:
- After your video has uploaded and compressed, click your avatar in the top right hand corner.
- From the list that appears, click the YouTube Studio button next to your account.
- In the left navigation bar, click “Creator Studio Classic”.
- A survey screen will appear. Simply select "skip."
- Once the “Classic” version of Creator Studio launches, you should see your recently uploaded video in the video block.
- Click "Video Manager" in the left navigation area.
- Find the down arrow tip next to the edit button of your video.
- Click the down arrow and select “Enhancements” from the drop down list.
- Click the "Trim" button at the bottom of the window.
- An editing timeline will appear below your video. Drag the left blue handle to the right until you reach the desired starting point of your clip.
- Drag the right blue handle to the left until you get to your desired ending point.
- Allow your video to play to ensure you have the desired starting and ending points.
- When everything is set the way you would like it, click the blue "Done" button.
- Your trimmed video will now appear. If you are confident that it is exactly as it needs to be, click the “Save as new video button."
- The video will appear in your video list once it is done processing. During processing, double check again to be sure that the video is marked as private.
Downloading your video clip from YouTube (Compress and convert)
- Once your trimmed video clip has finished processing, click the more options icon (which is the three stacked dots) next to your video.
- Select "Download" from the drop down list.
- Your video will download to your computer converted into .Mp4 format and compressed to a very efficient file size.
