Compress

Just a recap of our important definitions:

• Trim- remove time from the beginning and/or end of a video file to make it shorter in time. Still results in a continuous video that is not edited in the middle.
• Compress- Use a digital tool to shrink the size of the video file; does not affect the length of the video in time.
• Convert- Use a digital tool to change the format of the video so that it can be viewed on a particular device or devices. The preferred format is .mp4 as it can be viewed on a variety of devices. Formats accepted by edTPA include .flv, .asf, .qt, .mov, .mpg, .mpeg, .avi, .mp4, and .m4v. Conversion does not directly change the file size or the length.

Note: With many applications, Compression and Conversion happen simultaneously.

Because several of the tools used to this point convert and compress simultaneously, your video may be complete and ready to submit. Remember, videos should be smaller than 200-300 MB and MUST be smaller than 500MB.

Determining File Size on Windows

1. Locate and highlight the file(s) or folder for which you want to determine the size.
2. Right-click the file, and then click Properties.
3. As can be seen in the image below, you can determine the size of the file or files you have highlighted from within the file properties window. In this example, the chrome.jpg file is 18.5 KB (19,032 bytes), and that the size on disk is 20.0 KB (20,480 bytes).

Determining File Size of Mac OS

1. Locate the file or folder whose size you would like to view.
2. Click once on the file or folder.
3. Press Command + I on your keyboard.
4. A window opens and shows the size of the file or folder.
