ankylosis, anchylosis は「（関節の）硬直」を意味し、1713年の初出とされている。『英語語源辞典』には <k> で綴られた語形と <ch> で綴られた語形の両方が見出しとされているが、ネオ・ラテン語の ankylosis、そしてギリシャ語の agkúlōsis「関節の硬直」に遡る。さらに、agkúlōsis は agkúlos「屈曲した」、そして ágkos「...を曲げる」から派生したもので、印欧祖語の *ank- に遡る（cf. ankle, angle）。
<k> と <ch> の異綴りについて、OED には “The reg. transliteration of the Greek is ancylosis; to preserve the hard c this has been spelled with ch, for which some substitute k. Compare French ankylose.” (“Anchylosis | Ankylosis, N.”) との説明が付されている。また、Upward and Davidson は “The normal Graeco-Lat transliteration *ancylosis (< Gr ankulōsis ‘stiffening of the joints’) would wrongly suggest that the C would be pronounced /s/ before Y. To avoid this, two alternative devices have been used; a ‘modern’ transliteration with K as in ankylosis, and the insertion of an H to give anchylosis (which wrongly suggests CH transliterating Gr chi ).” (p. 225) とある。英語において、<c> は後舌母音字 <a, o, u> の前では /k/ の音を表し、前舌母音字 <i, y, e> の前では /s/ の音を表すことが習慣となっており、ギリシャ語から *ancylosis と転写すると <c> は /k/ ではなく /s/ で発音すると解釈される可能性があるため、<k> や <ch> で綴られるようになったという点は、OED と Upward and Davidson で共通している。また、Upward and Davidson は <ch> の綴字はギリシャ文字の χ (chi) を転写したものと誤って示唆している（ギリシャ語の agkúlōsis には κ (kappa) が用いられている）と指摘している。
