UVA's Policy, Leadership, and Advocacy by Youth” (PLAY) program this summer for rising 9th-12thgraders on UVA’s campus. With a goal of exposing high school students to the field of public policy and the college application process, we have partnered with the award-winning iThrive Games to develop a week of activities that will not only be fun and engaging, but, more importantly, will provide students with practical tools to prepare them for college.
The program, offered at no cost to participants, includes:
· a public speaking and writing workshop;
· a presentation by Kamala Harris’ former speechwriter;
· daily “lunch and learns” with policymakers;
· a fieldtrip to Farmville to explore the historic origins of the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision
· application and resume workshops led by college consultants
· “graduation gifts” like professional headshots, padfolios, Batten School swag, and a network of college-aged mentors!
Additionally, students will receive both breakfast and lunch each day.
The program, directed by UVA and iThrive faculty and administrators and facilitated by UVA college students, will run daily from July 18-22 (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) in UVA’s centrally located Garrett Hall. If enough students are interested, free transportation may be provided. Interested students who are rising 9th-12th graders should complete this application by Friday, June 17.
