Kinball Pinball
Object: The dodger tries not to get tagged by the kinball
Equipment: Kinball, stopwatch
Playing Area: Three-Second Area/Basketball Lane use the extra 1⁄2 circle for large classes. The playing area is called the Pinball Machine.
Directions:
1. One dodger at a time enters the Pinball Machine and tries not to be tagged by the ball for as long as they can. The dodgers
must stay on their feet during play.
2. Other players (the flippers) spread out on the pinball machine perimeter and try to push the ball into the dodger. Flippers may
only use their hands to contact the ball. I rotate the starting flipper each time so everyone has a chance to be the starter.
3. Players should have both feet outside the perimeter of the pinball machine but may have one foot inside when reaching to
push the kinball.
4. When the dodger is tagged, they find a place on the perimeter and a new player enters the pinball machine.
5. Play until everyone has a chance to be the dodger.
Note: I give each student the choice to be timed when they are dodging.
The Nest
The nest is team building and throwing activity. This is not something that I have ever done before, but the idea is intriguing to me. This activity has multiple stages and can be added to or subtracted from depending on the abilities of students and the time that you have. You need one or two Kinballs and as many gator type balls as you can find.
Rules: Students can only throw balls at the kinball to make it move. Nobody is allowed to touch the ball or else it gets returned to the starting nest. Students should give the kinball a halo of space to allow it to move freely. Students should talk through how they are going to make this work before they start throwing.
The objective of the activity is to move a Kinball from one place to another. I might start with some simple challenges like:
● Hit the ball from one side of the gym to the other.
● Hit the ball so that it touches a wall on all four sides of the gym
● Hit the ball so that it touches a doorway
● Hit the ball so that it travels through a set of cone obstacles
Once students have shown that they can control where the Kinball moves with their throws now they are ready for the first nest.
Nest #1. Place two hula hoops on opposite sides of the gym. Students are tasked with throwing balls at the kinball so that it leaves the starting nest and ends up in the finish line nest.
Nest #2. Place a kinball in each nest. Split the class into two teams. Each team is trying to move their kinball from one nest to the other. Students are not allowed to infringe on the other teams kinball.
Nest #3. Place one kinball in the middle. Split the class into two teams. Each team is trying to get the one kinball to go to their nest. They must continue to be thrown (no hoarding) and all teammates must stay away from the kinball.
Human Pinball
Equipment: 1 Omnikin Ball, large gym space
Directions: Organize the class into a large diameter circle (you may wish to define the circle using poly-dots). The Circle should be at least 15-20 feet in diameter. Select five students to move into the middle of circle. The objective of the game is for the students remaining on the outside of the circle to hit the omnikin ball across the circle and hit the human targets in the middle. The students in the middle try to avoid being hit by dodging the ball. When struck with the ball, the students inside the circle move back the team oircle. After the round ends, select a new group of students to oceupy the inside the circle. After everyone has had a chance to be inside the circle, organize a 'championship' round for students who won their respective rounds.
Rules: Student must remain on the outside circle, the tendency is for the circle to constantly shrink as students move in. Reset each round and remind students to widen the circle.
Safety: Don't allow students to kick the ball.
Indiana Jones
Equipment: 1Omnikin Balle, poly dots, music
Directions: Have the students form a circle around the top of the key on the Basketball court or the center circle in the gym. Adjust the circle by having the kids take a big step backwards. It helps, ëspecially with younger kids to use poly-dots to help define the circle. Select four students to stand Inslde the center of the clrele back to back facing outward (north, south, east and west). Explain the scene from the movle lndlana Jones where the huge boulder is chasing Dr. Jones down the corridor and explain that we are going to play game just like that. Have the students practice passing the ball around the inside circle as fast as they can.
Next select one student to be a runner. The runner starts on the inside of the circle opposite the ball. On the teachers cue the group tries to pass the ball around the cirele fast enough to tag the runner. I time the runner to see how long they can last, stopping them at one minute if they make it that long. At that time I let the runner select the next runner (boys must choose a girl/girls must ohoose a boy).
Rules: Keep the ball on the ground and maintain the outer circle. Changing the direction of the ball is permitted, but doing so often disrupts the flow of the game.
King Court Kinball
Equipment: 4 Omnikin Balls. poly dots, numbered cones, music
Directions: Divide the gym into four quarters using poly dots and place a numbered cone (1-4 in each corner. Place the 5 cone in a designated waiting area (l use the stairs).
The object of the game is to get three of the four balls in one area at the same time and thus eliminating that team. If a team is eliminated, the waiting team comes in at court four the other teams rotate up to fill in. The eliminated team goes to the waiting area. I referee the game and blow the whistle each time a team is eliminated.
Following each elimination, each ball must return to a numbered cone to start the game again.. I blow the whistle to start the game
*I modify this game for k-2 by not having a waiting team. I simply divide them into four teams and call the games "Kin Ball Clean-up your own backyard", with the object being to keep the kin ball out of your playing area.
Rules: Volleyball style strikes and pushing the ball only, no kicks. Do not allow players to grip the inside of the ball and fling. Players must stay in their own designated area.
Planet Chaser
Players form two circles (inner circle and outer circle) simmilar to the setup for Indian Jones. Instead of running from the Omnikin Ball, the playerhas to run after the ball and touch it with both hands. The player has 30 seconds to touch the ball and earn a point. If not, everyone else gets a point. Make sure eah player has a turn.
