Lacrosse Shooting Stars
Split the class into multiple teams in the gym. Each team will have one ball and one lacrosse stick. Set out lots of poly dots all over the floor and different distances to a basketball hoop. Students are to move to the poly dot and using the lacrosse stick throw the ball to the hoop. If the ball touches the backboard, rim, or net they get to take the spot back to their team. Make the different colors be worth varying amounts of points.
Receiver Rescue
Split the class into two teams. Everyone has a stick and put lots of soft balls (3 inch gator balls) all over the floor. Each team chooses two students to act as the teams starting throwers. They start on their side of the gym and everyone else on their team starts in their jail. Throwers toss the balls to their teammates. If a teammate catches a throwers ball then they get to join the thrower on their side. They can throw and get more teammates out of jail or they can defend the other teams jail. We added a second way to get out of jail and that it for the people in jail to throw a ball to the throwers and if it is caught they can get out of jail. If anyone intercepts a pass from the other team, the thrower is sent back to jail.
4 Team or 6 Team Lacrosse
Setup six big boxes in the corners of the gym. Inside each box place at least 3 bowling pins. No goalies are allowed and each team starts with a couple of small gator balls. Students try to move around the gym and knock over the other teams bowling pins. If they knock over a pin they get to grab it and bring it back to their square. Teams can only shoot at a goal once before moving on to another goal. Students are not allowed to move with a ball in their basket.
Continuos Pin Lacrosse
Setup 15 poly dots on each side of the gym. Place 8 bowling pins on 8 of the dots. Separate the class into two teams. Students have to stay on their side of the court and throw the gator balls using the lacrosse stick. If they knock over a bowling pin then they get to retrieve that pin and place it on one of their empty poly dots. Their goal is to fill up all of their poly dots before the other team.
Lacrosse Chaos
Setup 20ish poly spots in each side of the gym. Have students give each color spot a point value. Put students on two teams, one on each side of the gym. Students are to go to the other side o of the gym and throw their ball from the polydot to hit a basketball hoop. If they hit the hoop then they get to take the dot back with them. If they miss they have to go back to touch their wall to reload their ball. Students may put any polydots that they steal from the other team in any location on their side of the gym. They should be thoughtful about where they place them to make sure that they make it difficult for the other team to steal back. Near the end of the game, I open it up to both teams to shoot from any spot and bring the spots to a pile on the sideline. These points they will be able to keep the other team from stealing back. This is also a great way to start cleanup while the kids are still throwing.
Lacrosse Snowball Fight
Setup a wall of mats across the gym. Separate the two teams by this wall. Each student has a lacrosse stick and dump all of the balls onto the floor. Place a bucket at the backside of each court. Students are to throw the balls over the wall to the other side. If a student is able to catch a ball in the air then they can place it in the bucket as a point. Remind students to keep throwing balls or else the other team won't have any balls to throw their direction. You could also make a basketball hoop as an automatic bucket dump of the other teams points. So if they make a basket the other teams loses all their points.
Lacrosse Burn Bucket
(sidenote: I like continuous kickball version better because it keeps the kids moving more, but this is good too).
Put out 4 bases (mats unfolded). One team of students is in the field with sticks. Fielders can't use their hands at any point..only sticks. The batting team only has 3 or 4 sticks. I took 3 or 4 batters all at the same time. They each throw a ball out into the gym and start running the bases. Just like in burn bucket, students need to be on a base when the balls are put into the bucket. If not, they are out. Tagging a person or a base does nothing. If a ball is caught in the air, the entire group of throwers is out. I mixed things up by making the fielding team get all 3 or 4 balls into the bucket to stop the runner or just one ball. I liked having more balls in the bucket because it made more fielders do their work.
Lacrosse Continuous Kickball
Put out 4 bases (mats unfolded). One team of students is in the field with sticks. Fielders can't use their hands at any point..only sticks. Throwing team (batters) lines up in a single file line with sticks. First person in line places their stick basket down on the ground to show they are ready. The pitcher has 3 balls in their bucket. Pitcher (teacher) rolls a ball to them and they pick it up and throw it wherever they want and start running the bases. Catching the ball, tagging a base, or tagging the runner does nothing. As soon as the first thrower has thrown, the pitcher picks up the next ball in the bucket. Pitcher will continue this until everyone on the team has thrown. To score a point, the throwers have to move quick enough to have zero balls in the bucket when the pitcher looks for the next ball. Fielders want to make sure they are always getting the ball back to the bucket as quick as possible. This method keeps the game moving very quickly. Picking up the ball on the pitched roll can be tricky for younger students (3rd and below).
Lacrosse Container Ball
Split the gym into two halves. Place a team of players on both sides. Every student with a stick and lots of balls around. Place two tubs on each side or put a couple of mats on end to create a large container. Place an unfolded mat on the ground. The mat is the teams jail for any players that get tagged on the other teams side of the court. Students are to throw using their lacrosse sticks into the containers on the other teams side. If they choose to get closer and go across the middle line then they can get tagged by the other team. If tagged they go to jail. They can get out of jail in 3 ways. #1. If a teammate runs across and tags them they both get free backs to their sides as long as they put their hands up in the air. #2. If someone catches a ball while in jail the entire jail gets set free. #3. If someone makes a basket on the other teams hoop the entire jails gets to go free. Teams with the most balls in the container would be the winner. I told students that if anyone tagged with their stick that they would be sent to jail. Tagging was with hands only.
