Jump Rope Ninja Levels
This is my new favorite way to teach the intermediate grade students different jump rope skills. It's highly motivating and it allows each student to work at their own pace and level.

100 Point Challenge
Another way to motivate the kids to try more jump rope skills...use a 100 point challenge over the course of a few class period. Students try to earn as many points as they can.
Jump Roping Challenges
My jump rope unit is a work in progress. This year I have created a list of challenges for my students. Some are easy and others are more difficult. These will hit kids of all different abilities. The challenges are attached below.
In addition, I have also attached a worksheet that my students are working on throughout our unit. Feel free to use it any way you like.
Chinese Jump Ropes
Are another fun way to get the kids moving and working in small groups. Chinese Jump Ropes are elastic bands that are placed around the ankles of two students four or five feet away from one another. A third student steps inside to be the jumper. There are many routines to try and each routine can be tried at different levels- the ankle level, knee level, pocket level.
This is the starting routine
Straddle-Straddle-Straddle-Straddle-In-Out-In-On
Standard Sequence
Standard with a Spin
Next: Straddle-Straddle-Straddle-Straddle-In-Out-Spin-On - Make sure students spin while keep their feet near the ground so that the rope gets tangled in their feet.
Standard with a Cross
Next: Straddle-Straddle-Straddle-Straddle-In-Out-Across-On Make sure that students take the rope with them when they jump across.
Standard with a Backwards Cross
Next: Straddle-Straddle-Straddle-Straddle-In-Out-Across Backwards-On Make sure that students take the rope with them with they jump across.
Next: Make up their own.
Graduation
Create groups of 6 to 9 kids. While two members are the turners the rest of the kids are the class. Each class starts at kindergarten and must move through the grades as a group. In kindergarten, each class member must run through the rope without hitting it or making it stop (back door). This does not have to be continuous. If someone makes a mistake the entire class starts at the same grade level and the classmate that made the mistake becomes a turner. When they reach 1st grade the class has to run in and jump once before getting out. 2nd grade is the same with two jumps in the middle. Classes can keep going to see how many grades they can complete.
Team Jump Rope
This is a class activity. Have the class line up in a single file line with two turners. The turners are going to turn the rope so that the class can attempt to run through without stopping or touching the rope. Start the class at the front door and if they all make it through have the class do the same thing through the back door. If the entire class is successful, the group moves on to stage 2 where students need to run through in pairs. If successful the class moves on to 4's and then 8's. If a member ever makes a mistake they move to the end of the line.
1 to 5 to 1
Create groups of 6 to 9 kids. With two turners the groups are going to create a jump order. First person in line needs to get into the rope and jump three times before the 2nd person jumps in and joins them. The two of them will jump three times before the third person joins them. Keep going with this until everyone is in the rope and they have jumped 3 times as a group. At that point the last person jumps out...then three more jumps and the second to last person jumps out and so on until everyone is out of the rope. Switch anyone that makes a mistake with a turner.
Whirlwind Challenge
This is a class activity. With two turners have the class line up in a single file line. Students are attempting to run through the rope without allowing it to touch them or letting the rope stop. If they make a mistake they take the place of one of the turners. As a class they are counting how many people they can get through before a mistake is made. Each turn of the rope must have a person moving through or else the group starts back at 1.
