In school and in life, building strong relationships with others is an important skill. This month, we are focusing on connection. Connection means building positive relationships through trust, communication, kindness, and shared experiences with others.
When students develop connection, they begin to understand the importance of feeling seen, heard, and valued by those around them. They learn that strong relationships are built through listening, showing care, and spending intentional time with others. Practicing connection also helps students develop empathy, strengthen friendships, and feel a greater sense of belonging within their classroom and community.
By strengthening this skill, students learn that relationships matter. Choosing connection helps them build supportive friendships, communicate more effectively, and grow into individuals who understand the importance of working together and caring for others both inside and outside the classroom.
For example, Connection as a Student Can Look Like:
Including others and making them feel welcome
Starting conversations and engaging with peers in positive ways
Listening actively and showing interest in what others are saying
Participating in group activities and teamwork
Showing kindness through words and actions
Building and maintaining friendships
Offering help and support to classmates when needed
Sharing and cooperating with others
Using respectful communication when working through disagreements
Spending time getting to know others’ interests and experiences
Showing appreciation for others and their contributions
Being present and engaged during shared activities and learning experiences
Why Does Connection Matter? It helps students:
Build positive and supportive relationships with peers and adults
Develop a sense of belonging within their classroom and school community
Strengthen communication and social skills
Increase empathy and understanding of others
Improve teamwork and collaboration skills
Support emotional well-being and resilience
Create a positive and inclusive learning environment
Learn how to build healthy relationships that last beyond the classroom
