Integrity

In school and in life, learning to do the right thing—even when it’s difficult—is an important skill. This month, we are focusing on integrity. Integrity means being honest, taking responsibility for our actions, and making good choices even when no one is watching.

When students develop integrity, they begin to understand the importance of being trustworthy and accountable. They learn that mistakes are a natural part of learning, and that taking ownership of those mistakes shows strength and character. Practicing integrity also helps students build trust with their peers and adults, creating a more positive and respectful environment.

By strengthening this skill, students learn that their actions matter. Choosing integrity helps them build strong relationships, make thoughtful decisions, and grow into individuals who can be counted on both inside and outside the classroom.

For example, Integrity as a Student Can Look Like:

• Being honest, even when it’s difficult

• Taking responsibility for their actions and choices

• Admitting mistakes and working to fix them

• Following rules and expectations, even when no one is watching

• Doing their own work and giving their best effort

• Treating others fairly and respectfully

• Keeping promises and being someone others can trust

• Making positive choices even when peers may be making different ones

• Returning items that don’t belong to them

• Being truthful in conversations with peers and adults

• Standing up for what is right in a kind and respectful way

• Showing consistency between their words and actions 

Why Does Integrity Matter? It helps students:

• Build trust with peers, teachers, and family members

• Develop a strong sense of responsibility and accountability

• Make thoughtful and ethical decisions

• Strengthen positive relationships and a respectful school environment

• Learn from mistakes and grow from their experiences

• Develop confidence in who they are and the choices they make

• Carry strong character skills into future opportunities 

Why/How Mrs. Tammen teaches Integrity:

• Classroom Lessons: Teaching students what integrity means through real-life scenarios, discussions, and examples that highlight honesty, responsibility, and doing the right thing.

• Practice & Reinforcement: Using role-play, reflection activities, scenario discussions, and class conversations to help students apply integrity in everyday situations.

• Tools & Resources: Using visuals, read-alouds, discussion prompts, and decision-making frameworks to guide students in understanding and practicing honest and responsible behavior.

• Collaboration with Families & Teachers: Partnering with staff and families to reinforce consistent language and expectations around honesty, accountability, and positive decision-making at school and at home.

• Personal Support: Working individually with students to process choices, problem-solve situations, take ownership of actions, and build skills in honesty and accountability.
