Advanced 1 & 2 Ceramic students studied Turkish tiles. Their goal was to accurately reproduce 3 tiles. Students researched Turkish tile designs and noted the tulip, rose and carnation and were eager to render these designs. We also talked about the ‘evil eye” a motif used in Turkish tiles (and everywhere for that matter) for protection. They could make all tiles the same, create 3 different tiles or create tiles of their own but had to use Turkish symbols and colors.

Once students had their designs sketched out they rolled out slabs of clay and cut them down to a workable size. Just keeping a tile flat while drying is a task. Once tiles were bisque it was time to glaze. We used underglazes, these are glazes that only require one coat and will stay where you put them. They could also put a coat of clear over their tiles. The Advance students learned about another culture while also appreciating the detail, symbolism and craftsmanship required for one tile.
