Ceramics 1 & 2, Advanced Ceramics 1-3
Welcome to the Douglas High School Art Department! We are looking forward to a great year full of rewarding experiences, learning and art. This sheet is provided to give you information on our classes, general policies, special events and opportunities.
CLASSES: The department offers classes in: Ceramics 1 & 2 and Advanced Ceramics 1, 2 & 3, Drawing and Painting, Art Exploration, Sculpture, Native American Art and World Crafts.
ATTENDANCE AND TARDIES: Being in class is of special importance in “hands on” classes, since it is difficult to make up lost studio time. If possible, let your teacher know in advance of planned absences, including athletics and activities. Be in class on time! Habitual absences creates low grades.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS: Your teacher will make every effort to provide you with a quality experience and help you grow to your potential. In return, you will be expected to make a positive contribution in the following ways: 1. Be in class on time and ready to work. 2. Know class routines. 3. Clean up after yourself and participate in any assigned cleanup or maintenance tasks. 4. Treat others with respect. 5. Respect the facilities and materials you are using. Ms. Bonner will have class-specific Expectations and Proceedures.
EXHIBITIONS: Douglas has a juried exhibition at the end of the school year.
In late April/early May the Dahl selects work from our students for their summer show.
SCHOLARSHIPS: The Art Department is informed of many scholarship opportunities each year. Ask your teacher for information. We place a high emphasis on high quality artwork and student portfolio development. We can help you to successfully seek art
Scholarships AND other types of scholarships. Douglas Art Department offers a scholarship! Applications are now in the Guidance office, so if you are a senior you should apply!
STUDIO NIGHTS: Once a week, usually beginning in September/ October, the Ceramics room will be open an hour after school each week. This is an opportunity for Ms. Heinrich’s students to get caught up on any missed days, put in extra time or meet grading deadlines.
GRADING: For each project, and for each grading term, specific standards are set that will be used to evaluate student work on that project. As an example, here are the standards for a Beginning Ceramics project.

Well- attached handles and lugs
Even or regular rim, edges rounded to prevent glaze parting (crawling)
A= Exceeded 2 or more standards
C= Did not meet 1-2 standards
F= Did not meet standards/ No effort
After our first conference, your student will be able to explain the grading process to you.
The art department is committed to helping you make your experience in art an enjoyable production, whether you only take one class or plan on a career.
