In 2016 Logan Garr, who at the time was a freshman was selected to participate in the Japan Society Junior Fellows Leadership Program. Only ten High School students are chosen to attend from across the United States. The application process included writing essays, securing references and a skype interview with the Japan Society of New York. Logan is the first student from South Dakota to receive this honor. He first spent a few days in New York taking classes and getting to know his travel mates and then it was off to Japan. While in Japan, he spent three weeks living with a host family experiencing Japanese culture, language instruction and discussions on leadership in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Yokohama. The program is designed to provide cultural understanding and leadership instruction with the expressed purpose of developing a sustainable network of talented leaders on both sides of the Pacific.
