Welcome to AVID! AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. In AVID we focus on student’s individual Journeys to College & Career. Students learn Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) strategies that help them become better students now and for the future. Students reflect on their strengths, struggles, and passions. This helps students identify and focus on their needs and set goals for growth and achievement. Students research careers, high schools, and colleges that match their current interests and share their research with our school community through AVID Family Nights.
Former AVID students frequently come back as guest speakers and tutors. Their words motivate our current students to work hard and never give up. It helps them to believe, If they can do it, so can I! Raelyn Tang (our AVID tutor manager) and I attend all of our feeder high school graduations to congratulate our former students as they move on to college & career. As Mr. Harano says, Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle!
This school year we have a social studies teacher at WMS and two college tutors that are all former WMS AVID students. Full circle. 🦅 🎓 🫶🏼
