Would you rather have a spontaneous life or a neatly scheduled day to day? This is the dilemma that Konawaena students are facing with whether the old or new schedule would be more beneficial to their productivity, to mood, and ect.
The new schedule for high school is way better than the old one, it's better because of the later start times it allows students that live far away to have time to get to school or if you live close, it allows you to get more sleep this benefits students in class because they are less tired. Also, the new schedule has only 2 core classes and 2 elective classes, which reduces the workload per week. This helps with grades by giving the student time to focus on their work more closely without getting overly stressed out because of being overworked. In my personal experience with the new schedule, the best part about it is the routine of giving students the routine of having the same four classes, which allows students to really get into a working state of mind during the day.
A report written by Blaze Lovell said, “Tracy Trevorrow, a sleep researcher at Chaminade University, conducted an informal survey of Kaimuki students recently. Of the 750 students, about 70 percent volunteered to fill out a form that asked them about their sleep health. Mostly, students reported getting more sleep, improved sleep quality and even slightly better grades since the school switched its start time from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. in August 2015.”
What this piece of text shows us are the straight facts that prove that this new schedule is better for everyone who is affected by it.
But some people would argue otherwise. (BNN Correspondents) says, “The proposed later start time could also bring about a series of logistical challenges.
These complications range from coordinating after-school activities and school bus schedules to renegotiating teacher contracts.” Although these are convincing arguments for the other side, I still feel that the sleep benefits and stress reduction throughout the week outweigh the logistical challenges. Another benefit of the new schedule is that students have more time in class to focus on their work.
Saige said, “I prefer the new schedule over the older one, He believes the new schedule is better because, “Last year's schedule was a bunch of classes and my brain was just all over the place. Now I can focus more on one class and take it more slowly. In Saige's opinion, what makes this new schedule better is, “It feels like you're not in school as long even though it's the same time and you can focus on one subject at a time.”
Ultimately, the benefits of improved sleep and reduced stress make the new schedule a necessary change for our school community.
