Aloha, my name is Christina Kovach and I am a former newspaper writer, foreign correspondent, and war reporter. Now I teach English Language Arts and Journalistic Writing and Publishing at Konawaena High School, my alma mater! I was born in South Kona, where I grew up on a macadamia nut and coffee farm. I love helping young journalists find their voice and create change in their community.

A story I wrote for The New York Times about a massive spider web, when I was a Dallas-based contributor for the national newspaper...

My last job as a journalist before moving back to my hometown of Kailua-Kona was at The San Diego Union-Tribune, where I covered the Marine Corps, National Guard, combat casualty care, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After journalism graduate school at Columbia University, I worked for nine months as an intern at Newsweek magazine. In New York City, I covered the 9-11 terrorist attacks from Ground Zero of the World Trade Center. Then I became a Cairo-based "stringer" (freelance contributor) for the magazine, where I reported this story...

My first real job as a journalist was at West Hawaii Today newspaper, where I also interned on summer break from college. The text of one of my stories is linked here.
