What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guides
The What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guides practice guide is a publication that presents recommendations for educators to address challenges in their classrooms and schools. They are based on reviews of research, the experiences of practitioners, and the expert opinions of a panel of nationally recognized experts.
Practices that meet the U.S. Department of Education definition of Strong Evidence (Tier 1)
under ESSA are shown in green. Practices meeting the definition of Moderate Evidence (Tier 2) are shown in yellow. Practices in gray, which the guides describe as based on "minimal evidence," meet the Department's definition of evidence that Demonstrates a Rationale (Tier 4). Recommendations from practice guides released in 2010 or earlier are not shown below, but can meet the Department's definition of Promising Evidence (Tier 3) if the guide describes the corresponding
evidence as "strong" or "moderate."

Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Intervention in the Elementary Grades
This What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guide provides evidence-based practices that can help teachers tailor their instructional approaches and/or their mathematics intervention programs to meet the needs of their students.
Systematic Instruction: Provide systematic instruction during intervention to develop student understanding of mathematical ideas.
Mathematical Language: Teach clear and concise mathematical language and support students’ use of the language to help students effectively communicate their understanding of mathematical concepts.
Representations: Use a well-chosen set of concrete and semi-concrete representations to support students’ learning of mathematical concepts and procedures.
Number Lines: Use the number line to facilitate the learning of mathematical concepts and procedures, build an understanding of grade-level material, and prepare students for advanced mathematics.
Word Problems: Provide deliberate instruction on word problems to deepen students’ mathematical understanding and support their capacity to apply mathematical ideas.
Timed Activities: Regularly include timed activities as one way to build fluency in mathematics.
These resources were created after the release of the 2020-2021 Priority Instructional Content in ELA/Literacy and Mathematics documents by the Student Achievement Partners. The resources were created to help teachers better plan their school year taking into consideration that students missed an entire quarter last school year.
The Mathematics Standards Toolkit contains resources and assessment tools for mathematics. These can be used to gather more information about your students in the area of mathematics. Assessment information can be used for evaluation, programming and instructional purposes.
This document is a curated list of free digital elementary resources contains rich math tasks and instructional routines to assist with engaging students in the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practices online or face-to-face. These tasks promote a growth mindset and can be utilized as short 5-15 minute activities or longer for deeper discussions and learning. This resource is a living document.
