The Department contributes to Hawaiian language revitalization by providing for K-12 Hawaiian language education. Kaiapuni schools deliver instruction exclusively through the medium of Hawaiian language until grade 5, whereupon English is formally introduced.

State Kaiapuni Distance Learning Program (SKDLP)- Ka Papahana Keleaʻo Kaiapuni
The Hawaiʻi Department of Education (HIDOE), through the Office of Hawaiian Education (OHE), will use the Kaiapuni distance learning design opportunity provided by the pandemic to prioritize long-standing issues related to the educational infrastructure of Kaiapuni education.
The virtual learning education program shall address student achievement through a flexible program design that will allow for:
A K-12 Interdisciplinary Approach to curriculum design
Prioritizing ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi learning engagement
Shared leadership and increased collaboration of Kaiapuni stakeholders
The fulfillment of the Kaiapuni mission statement which is to:
Provide a culturally rich and dynamic learning environment
Ensure excellence in the Hawaiian language, culture, history, and ways of knowing
Decision-making that empowers students to self-determine success and stewardship

A Kaiapuni Teacher Pathway
Palapala Aʻo Kūikawā (Hawaiian Permit)
Hawaiian Permit - As outlined by the Hawaiʻi Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) New Business Item 16-06, the Palapala Aʻo Kūikawā (PAK) may be awarded to an individual for a year, up to ten years, and may be renewed annually if all yearly requirements are met. The Office of Hawaiian Education (OHE) works in collaboration with Hawaiian Language Immersion Educational Preparation Program (HLI EPP) to carry out the work of this permit. There is also a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association (HSTA) for Hawaiian Special Permit Holders. (This is a pipeline to Kaiapuni teacher licensure, not an end goal.)
