FAFSA
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used by colleges and scholarship organizations to determine eligibility for federal and state grants, loans, work study, etc.
Need-based federal financial aid including grants, work study, and student loans, as well as merit-based scholarships are all determined by the FAFSA
To qualify for any of the above, students are often required to complete the FAFSA
This year’s application period launches on October 1
Be aware of individual college, state and federal deadlines for FAFSA completion deadlines because financial aid funding is limited
CSS Profile
The CSS Profile is used by select schools to determine eligibility for institutional (non-federal) aid
Check schools' Financial Aid websites to see if they require both the CSS Profile and FAFSA and what the deadline is
These specific schools use both the FAFSA (governments aid) and CSS Profile (institutional aid) to award grants, scholarships and loans directly
There is a fee if a student does NOT qualify for a College Board fee waiver
$25 first school and $16 for additional schools

Think your family makes too much money to qualify for Financial Aid? Guess again! There’s still time to access more than $150 billion in grants, loans and work-study funds from the federal government to help pay for college, regardless of your family income — all you need to do is complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Be cautious of any organization or individual that approaches you with the promise of finding any additional monies, loan forgiveness, scholarships, or helping you find colleges especially if they charge a fee. Many of the paid services they offer can be done or found for free. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, or visit the FAFSA website regarding this topic.
Need help completing the FAFSA? Email FAFSA@hawaii.edu and a FAFSA specialist will help answer your questions.
