Photography

The student learns to see and to communicate through the visual language of photography. The flexible nature of the medium lends itself to widely different approaches and points of view.

Though students are encouraged to experience and pursue any reasonable direction they choose whether it is artistic, commercial, journalistic, or scientific, the primary concern is Creative Photography.

Photography 1 - 3

Photography 1 is an introductory course to photography as a hobby and as an art form. It includes basic techniques in composition, exposure, lighting, and camera care and operation. Creative individual expression and goal setting is encouraged.

Photography 2 is an intermediate level course in advanced techniques allows for more independent work and the teacher is more of an advisor and counselor to each student. Photography and interpretation, visual communication and exhibition production are the primary emphasis.

Photography 3 is an advanced course in further developing skills and techniques learned in levels 1 and 2 which offer new ideas utilized in contemporary photography. Pursuing individual interests and goal-setting is encouraged. The photographic process as a creative and vital form of visual communication is emphasized.

Directed Studies in Art Problems - Photography

Designed for students to pursue interest and develop talent in specific types of photography such as studio photography or black and white photography. Content areas include studio and field light control, portfolio development and more. Students will pay for project costs beyond course requirements. May be repeated for credit. Completion of Photography 3 required. See instructor for approval.

Instructors

Oscar Ramiscal

Ramiscal earned his B.Ed. with Secondary Social Studies at UH Mānoa. He started teaching at JCHS from 1997 to 2011. Then he became a Tech Coordinator from 2011 to 2015. He is back to teach our scholars the fine art of photography before he transitions into an administrator. When he has time he likes hiking, walking, taking photos, and watching movies in theaters (pre-covid).

Jo Ann Mastin

Mastin earned her Bachelors in Secondary Education and Masters in Library and Information Science at UH Mānoa. She started her career at Campbell in 1996 as an English teacher. In total, she has been a Saber for 14 years. She teaches Photography, Newswriting, and Yearbook Production. She enjoys watching K Dramas with her husband, and playing board games with her two kids.

Ikaika Bicoy

Bicoy graduated from Hawaii Pacific University with a BA (Psychology), CTE License in Public Human Services from LCC. He has a magnetic and high energy personality. He enjoys being the DJ for online faculty meetings and chooses mostly late 80s and 90s club music to pump up afternoon meetings.
