If art doesn’t make us better, then what on earth is it for? ~ Alice Walker

Ceramics

Students will learn basic techniques to work with clay and glaze to produce three-dimensional work of art. They will document their thinking about their process via learning logs/sketchbooks. Advanced students will be able to continue honing their skills and may have opportunities to work with other equipment such as a pottery wheel.

Ceramics 1 to 4

Ceramics 1 is a basic introduction to hand building techniques in clay. Some of the techniques covered are: pinch, coils, slab and free-form modeling. Besides clay, other materials such as plaster, wire, and woods may be used for sculpture projects. The second half is work on the potter’s wheel and continued hand building.

Ceramics 2 is the continuation with emphasis on increasing skills and techniques in hand building clay forms. Student will be working on individual projects and potter’s wheel, mixing clay and loading the kiln.
