2020年に始まった新型コロナウイルス感染症の流行は2021年4月に入っても収まる気配はなく、研究者同士の対面での交流の機会は激減してしまいました。

The outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic that began in 2020 is still ragging at April 2021, and opportunities for face-to-face communications between researchers have been drastically reduced.

それを補うべく、オンラインによるセミナーが頻繁に行われるようになり、特に海外のミーティングなどは以前よりも気軽に参加できるようになったという声も聞かれます。

To compensate the lack of face-to face communications, a number of on-line meeting has been arranged, which makes it even easier to participate in international meetings overseas.

しかし、オンラインでの会話ではコミュニケーションツールが限られており、対面でのコミュニケーションなしに新しい友人を見つけることは非常に困難です。

However, communication tools are far more limited when we talk online, and it is very hard to find new friend without the face-to-face communication.

また、オンライン学会は日常業務との切り分けが難しくピンポイントの参加になりがちであることも、コミニケーションが一方向になってしまう大きな要因になっていると思われます。

In addition, it is somewhat difficult to separate online meeting from daily desk work, and people tend to participate on-line meeting only for a slot of interest. This may another reason why communication likely to become one-way, from speakers to audiences.

このような状況を考慮し、2021年の発生生物学会の年会は、シンポジウム・ワークショップと一般口頭発表・ポスター発表を切り離すことにし、一連の企画を個別に行うことにしました。

Considering these situations, we decided to have the annual meeting of JSDB as a series of on-line workshops and oral/poster presentations as follows.

すでに2/1に国際シンポジウムを行いましたが、今後も随時、シンポジウム・ワークショップを年会企画として開催していきます。通常の年会のように期限を決めた公募は行わず、年度内は随時対応していきますので、シンポジウム・ワークショップ開催のご希望がある方は年会事務局（jsdb2021@jsdb.jp）の方までぜひご連絡ください。

We have already had an international symposium on February 1, and we will continue to have symposia and workshops as part of the annual meeting. If you are interested in organizing a symposium or workshop, please contact the Annual Meeting Secretariat (jsdb2021@jsdb.jp). Your proposals are very welcomed.

年会の最も重要なイベントは口頭発表とポスター発表です。今年は6/17、18の両日で行います。今回は、オンラインでも新しい人の出会いができるよう、３つの新しい試みを用意しています。

The most important events of the annual meeting are the oral and poster presentations, which will be held on June 17 and 18. This year, we are planning following 3 events to further promote intensive communication between participants even on-line.

１）ワールドカフェ形式の少人数のディスカッション

Small group discussion in the form of a world café

２）一人一枚のグラフィカルアブストラクトと参加者の専門分野の可視化

Graphical abstracts for each person and visualization of participants' areas of expertise

３）発表者全員によるプログラム審査

Abstract review by all presenters

１）のワールドカフェは、初めて名前を耳にする人が多いのではないでしょうか。こちらのページに具体的な進行についての詳しい説明があります。ワールドカフェでは、参加者と聴衆は同じ視線でディスカッションを行います。いわば、全員が発表者です。偶然の出会いと交流を、ぜひお楽しみください。

You may have not heard of World Café . You can find a detailed explanation of World Cafe here. In a World Café, the participants and the audience have the same perspective on the discussion. Everyone is a presenter. We hope you will enjoy unexpected encounters and communications.

２）は、プログラム委員の皆様の専門分野を簡単なアンケートによって可視化したところ、なかなか興味深い結果になったので、それを参加者全員に広げようという試みです。基本的には、あるキーワードについてどれぐらい興味があるのかについてスコアを付けてもらい、そのスコアに応じて階層的クラスタリングを行います。自分と同じような興味を持っている人にはどのような人がいるのかを知る絶好の機会になるはずです。所属組織でなく自分の興味に基づいた自己紹介ができるよう、簡単なグラフィカルアブストラクトの提出もお願いします。

We once visualized the areas of expertise of the program committee members by means of a simple questionnaire, which results were quite interesting. We thus decided to expand the questionnaire to all participants to visualize everyones expertise. Basically, we ask the participants to give a score on how interested they were in certain keywords, followed by hierarchical clustering. This will be a great opportunity to find out who have similar scientific interests. We will also ask you to submit a simple graphical abstract so that you can introduce yourself based on your interests, not on your organizational affiliation.

３）は、みなさま学会参加の前に一通りアブストラクトに目を通すことも多いかと思いますが、せっかく目を通していただくのであればそれを口頭発表の審査に使わせていただこうという試みです。プログラム委員と発表者の双方が参加するNHK紅白方式です。

I am sure that many of you read through the abstract before attending the conference, and if so, why not use your impression for judging the oral presentations. This is the NHK Kohaku style, in which both program committee members and presenters participate for the judgement.

そして最後に使用言語について重要なアナウンスがあります。これまで日本発生生物学会では世界に開かれた年会を目指し、公用語を英語に限定してまいりました。しかしながら、コミュニケーションの手段が限られるオンライン上で、母国語以外の言語でコミュニケーションを取るのには、予想以上の困難が伴うことを認めざるを得ません。そこで、今回に限り、公用語を日本語、ならびに英語とします。多くの日本人にとって英語でのコミュニケーションが困難なように、日本語でコミュニケーションが困難な参加者もおられますので、画面共有の資料に英文の説明（字幕）をつける等の配慮も忘れずにお願いいたします。

Finally, there is an importance announcement on the official language. The official language during JSDB annual meeting has long been limited to English to make it open to the international scientific community. However, we must admit that on-line communication using non-native language, where communication tools are rather limited, can be more challenging than expected. This time, we decided to make official language Japanese and English. Just as it is difficult for many Japanese to communicate in English, there will be participants who have a difficulty in communication in Japanese. Please remember to provide English explanations (subtitles) on the screen-sharing materials.
