What is "Abstract Expressionism" and "Landscape Impressionism?"

Cheryl Johson and Jim Wildman are influenced by the creators of the contemporary painting styles of Abstract Expressionism, Tachism and Landscape Impressionism which really is a blend of classic impressionism and modern expressionism, with a dash of Plein Air style. Abstract Expressionist Painters valued freedom, spontaneity and personal expression, the movement naturally produced a variety of technical and aesthetic innovations. In general, however, Abstract Expressionism can be clustered around two major tendencies: action painting and color field painting. The physical act of painting is of paramount importance and is apparent in the finished product.

Informed by the idea of impermanence, Johnson and Wildman's layered evocative paintings invite the viewer’s emotional connection.

Describing their process as "taking turns and working in tandem. " Together they add subtle layers, additions, subtraction, construction, demolition. The work is a continual building up and removal; adding lines marks and gestures. Then emotionally adding a flourish or detail that takes them beyond the ordinary. Collaborating for excellence.

CHERYL JOHNSON " The most magical aspect of JW is the nearly infinite number of ways Jim and myself; who bring different expertise, insights, and perspectives can complement and combine. We both bring such different things to this new company, and I think the alchemy of our collaboration is delicious and most palpable. It's what makes our work exciting.”

Their contemporary impressionism and abstract paintings continue the tradition of the classic abstractionists and impressionists. johnson\wildman's works are collected by art museums and private collectors across the world.

johnson\wildman studio and gallery is located in Charlotte, North Carolina in Mecklenburg County in Piedmont Country, and our new showroom is by appointment only in the studio working gallery. Our gallery is located just north of Charlotte, on Beatties Ford Road close to Mountain Island Lake and Northlake Mall between Mount Holly Hunterville Road and Miranda Road.
