What is your favorite memory, having John Curtis as your father?
“My father lived for 3 things; God, family, and JCCS. He went to every activity associated with school, especially all the sports events. He loved to watch the Patriots play. He would cheer them on and be very vocal when they made a mistake. My favorite childhood memory was getting dressed up and going out to eat at a fancy restaurant in New Orleans. His favorite was the Blue Room in the Roosevelt Hotel. In the early years of school he would take the Srs there. They used to have dinner shows. He loved music especially jazz so we would go when there would be a singer performing. Going out to eat was our special treat as we never went on vacations because we worked year round at school. So many memories but that is one of my favorites.”
What is one of your favorite memories, having John Curtis as your father?
I have many wonderful stories of my father and his hard working, never giving up spirit. He attended Louisiana College, studying to become a minister. The Lord moved him into education, and in 1962, he founded John Curtis Christian School. He and my mother were always working at school and of course we were always with them. My daddy would have us answering phones during the summer. We also moved desks, counted books in the classrooms, and did many other jobs around school. It was from him and my mother that we learned to work hard. We learned that with God in control, nothing was impossible. My dad was a jokester, loved to play pranks, and have a good time. We would ask him, Daddy, what are we going to do tonight, and he would say the three F's: fun, food, and fellowship to which we would all groan. Today, I am so thankful for those 3 f's.
As an adult, I was working at school and we were days before opening and we needed an English teacher. I kept going to him and asking, "What are we going to do? We're opening soon.” He very calmly repeated, “the Lord's going to send someone, don't worry, trust God.” Later that week I heard him say, “Okay, we'll see you on Monday." After he hung up, he said, "Well, the Lord just sent me an English teacher." She was one of the best teachers we ever had. He taught me to trust the Lord in all things!
