Senzoku Gakuen Junior and Senior High School has developed a unique approach to educating students to be humble, compassionate, and able to serve and contribute to society. Our goal is to develop humans who can play a leading role in society. These individuals are required to have deep education, high intellect, excellent social skills, and high dignity. Our school's education is to build a solid foundation for this.
Maeda Wakao, the founder of Senzoku Gakuen, founded a private school in 1924 at her home in the former Hiratsuka Village (now Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo). Two years later, the school moved to its current location in Senzoku, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, and changed its name to Senzoku High School for Girls.
The name "Senzoku" may sound like the name of a place, but it is not. Although Senzoku Gakuen is not a mission school, Maeda Wakao was a devout Christian, and the name "Senzoku" is thought to be a reflection of this.
When Christ realized that tomorrow he would disappear on the cross, he washed the feet of his 12 disciples one by one and then sat down to the Last Supper. In the 13th chapter of the Gospel of John, we read in the New Testament
Jesus got up from the supper table, took off his jacket, took a hand towel and wrapped it around his waist, then poured water into a tub and began to wash the disciples' feet and wipe them with the hand towel wrapped around his waist. I have set you an example, that you may do as I have done to you.
Maeda Wakao, who was deeply concerned about the ideals of education, deeply believed in Christianity, and loved to sing hymns, would have named the school "Senzoku" without hesitation. Senzoku Gakuen was founded on the Christian ideals of gratitude, devotion, sacrifice, and service.
For over 90 years since then, the basic philosophy and educational goals of the school have been handed down from generation to generation, and the school has been providing education from kindergarten to graduate school.
