Choose ONE of the following activities to complete during the 2nd grading period. GT and AP students must choose from activities 1-10! Final activities are due by October 22. You will be expected to present your activity to the class the last week of the grading period. Sign-up sheets for presentations will be posted later in the grading period.

Please note that these centers count as THREE separate grades! (One grade for the activity, one grade for you presentation, one grade for your active listening during the presentations.)

All work must be neat, correct and attractive (this includes COLOR!). Be sure to label your end-product with the number of the activity given below.

1. Geography & Culture Create a pamphlet for a country in Central America or the Caribbean. Include information about the location, place (human characteristics and physical characteristics) and way of life (movement, culture, HEI, etc.).

2. Storytime Write a story about a child from Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean. The story must give correct information about what life is like in that area of the world. Consider what they would wear, eat, and do on a typical day. Consider family life, any difficulties they may face, and the location of these activities in the country of your story setting. You could share this story in the form of a short story with illustrations, a children’s book with illustrations, or another interesting and creative way you choose.

3. War! Research a war that has taken place in Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean.

Create an interesting way to share your information with the class. Information should include WHO the war was between, the CAUSES of the war, interesting/key PEOPLE or LEADERS in the war and how they were important to the war, the OUTCOME of the war, and the CONSEQUENCES of the war to all parties who fought.

4. Future Chefs Research to find traditional foods for one of the Central American or Caribbean countries. Choose 3-4 recipes that would make up a whole meal. Prepare at least 2 of the recipes for your family or friends to sample. Then

A. create a cookbook with the recipes included. Your cookbook should have a colorful cover with a title that mentions the country you are highlighting with the recipes and

B. create a review of each dish based on the opinions and comments of your family/friends. Your cookbook should have a colorful cover with a title that mentions the country you are highlighting with the recipes.

5. Come Here! Research one of these ancient Latin American places/people: Yaxha, Guatemala; Tikal, Guatemala; Incas of Peru; Cuzco, Peru; Machu Picchu, Peru; Easter Island, Chile; Aztecs of Mexico; Maya of Mexico; Create an advertisement/billboard to display what you learn about the places/people and encourage others to “visit” there.

6. Tell me. . . Record an interview that you conduct with someone from Mexico, a Central American country or a Caribbean country. (See the classroom Atlas, pgs. 52-53 for countries.) Turn in a written/typed copy of the interview questions and responses and/or a videotaped recording of the interview. Create a word cloud (check worditout.com) that highlights the important points you learned about that country from the interview

7. Cuba Research Cuba. Discover its history, current government and leaders, economy, and way of life. Create a colorful and well organized diagram/organizer that clearly displays what you learn about Cuba’s history, current government and leaders, economy and way of life (food, clothing, sports & recreation, arts & literature, language, religion, etc.). Include information about all 4 of the bold topics above.

8. Government Matters Create an organizer, flip book or chart that explains the federal government of Mexico, a Central American country or a Caribbean Island. BE SURE TO NAME THE TYPE OF GOVERNMENT THAT COUNTRY HAS, the different parts of the government and the job(s) of each part. Include the names of current office holders. Then choose ONE member of the government and write a short biography of his/her life.

9. Land, Ho! Research an explorer who came to Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean Islands from Europe or Asia. Create an interesting visual that shares information about the explorer, his journey, his discoveries, and how his exploration affected the people/place he “discovered.”

10. Money, Money, Money Compare the economy of Mexico with the economy of one other country in Central America. Create a visual that shares the information in an interesting way and that highlights the differences. Consider the natural resources, most common types of jobs, services, industries, name of the currency, etc.

11. Geography Research the major landforms of North America, Central America or the Caribbean. Create a large map that has four or more of these landforms marked and labeled. Give three facts about each of the landforms you mark.

12. Where to Go? Research to discover 5 interesting places to visit in Mexico, Central America and/or the Caribbean. Create a map that shows the location of each tourist place and give 3+ facts about each place.

13. Cultures of the Western Hemisphere Choose a country from Central America or the Caribbean. Research the culture (government system, economic system, language, religion, arts & literature, customs & traditions, social organization) of the people there. Consider their food, homes, clothes, economic activities, recreational activities, etc. Create a colorful, interesting visual that shares the culture of that country and includes AT LEAST 5 of the elements of culture (listed above). Be sure to put the NAME of the country on the visual!

NOTE: Work is expected by the due date of October 22. If your activity is late, you will probably forfeit you opportunity to present, which will result in a grade of 0% for that part of the assignment. Late activities will lose 10 points per day they are late. NO activities will be accepted late after 3 days.

You will receive a grade for the project, the presentation, and your active listening to the presentations of others.

Social Studies projects are due by Tuesday, September 18. Students have received a copy of the sheet below with their options.

Enrichment Learning Centers—Grading Period 1

Choose 1 of the following activities to complete during the 1st grading period. GT and AP students must choose an odd-numbered activity! Final activities are due by September 18. You will be expected to present your project to the class the last week of the grading period. Sign-up sheets for presentations will be posted later in the grading period.

All work must be neat, correct and attractive. Be sure to label your end-product with the number of the activity given below.

1. Create a 3D model of a landform. Label the model with the name of the landform and post on the model labels to show the different parts of the landform. Also post information about how this landform is developed.

2. Choose either Place (Physical Characteristic & Human Characteristics) or Human-Environment Interaction. Relate it to the Louisville area and show what you find in a visual way.

3. (NOTE: The second option on #3 is the GT and AP option.) Map out your neighborhood/area of town. Show and label some physical features and human features; include a key & title OR

make a map of your neighborhood or community. It must include an accurate title, key, compass, and be to scale. EITHER map must be neat and colorful.

4. Write a poem or song about one of the 5 Themes of Geography or about all of the 5 themes. It should be at least 3 stanzas long.

5. What are your five themes? Describe, design, or put together (you decide how) the five themes of geography that represent who you are so that we can learn about you. All five themes must be used.

6. Make a 5 Themes of Geography collage. All five themes must be labeled and represented, and it must be clear which one they are. Use pictures, magazines, drawings and words to design.

7. Design your own country using at least 3 of the thematic maps (political, physical, climate, vegetation, population, economic activity). Your maps should give information about your country and the make sense as far as where the economic activities take place or where your large cities are located. Write a paragraph to describe each map and why you placed items where you did.

8. Create a geography crossword puzzle with accurate terms and clues. You will need at least 15 words and clues.

9. Choose a country from Central America or South America. Research the culture of the people there; consider their food, homes, clothes, economic activities, recreational activities, religion, etc. Create a colorful, interesting visual that shares the culture of that country. Be sure to put the name of the country on the visual!
