What have we been up to this week?

November 12-30

Blocks 1, 3, 4-Students have been working in literature circles reading The Night Diaries, A Long Walk to Water, Home of the Brave, and Refugee. Everyday students have come into class and shared out the role they were responsible for completing. The roles shared were discussion director, connector, investigator, vocabulary enricher, literary luminary, plot profiler, and illustrator.

Students are now to create a character sketch and get ready for their Socratic circle.

Block 2- Students have been reading A Long Walk to Water and analyzing Salva as a character and the conflicts he has faced.

Next week all classes we being to write their essays.

October 15-19

This week students are practicing capitalization rules for warm ups. We are continuing our dialogue on text structure with a focus this week on author's purpose.

October 3-12

Students finished up annotating, participated in their first Socratic circle, and participated in the refugee simulation. We also started reviewing text structure through text structure plays.

September 17-20

The end of this week was crazy! We had our field trip, unexpected fire drill, picture day and I'm pretty sure a full moon?! While it was hectic, we did manage to start talking about annotations, book reports, completed a lame words quiz and a vocab quiz! Grades have been updated and Monday will be the last day of the grading period.

September 10-14


This week students continued writing summaries. They wrote summaries with partners, received feedback, and then wrote their own with a new article for a mastery grade. Students also worked on eliminating lame words in their writing.


September 4-7

Students worked on summarizing non-fiction articles using The Gist strategy. They also practiced various studying strategies with index cards. Students took their first Greek and Latin roots quiz on Friday, along with going to the library for orientation.

Wednesday afternoon students took the first MAP reading test.

August 27-31

This week students completed their first Greek and Latin roots packet. Students were able to identify different types of analogies along with identifying the right answer. Students ended the week by reading an article titled "Student Suspended for Pink Hair" and started talking about The Gist strategy for summarizing. On Friday students took a baseline On-Demand.

August 20-24

Students set up their writer's notebooks, talked about 7 types of analogies, and had a discussion on what it means to be present. They also received their first Greek and Latin roots packet. The first packet will be completed in class with a quiz next Friday. After next week they will receive a new packet every two weeks to be completed at home and turned in the following Monday for a progression grade.

August 15-17

Students traveled in homeroom classes. In my room students worked on creating their own coat of arms. The purpose of this activity was to get to know one another. Final copies are due on Monday.
