PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Brown School Family,
We have all been spending a lot of time engaged in professional development this summer to get ready for implementation of new curricula for K-8 reading and mathematics. This week I am attending training on Illustrative Mathematics, so I hope to share more about that with you soon.
Earlier this summer I attended training on Expeditionary Learning (EL). I have to say that I am not only optimistic but excited!
One of the main benefits of using the EL curriculum is that it is grounded in research on how students learn to read. The curriculum is based on the science of reading, which emphasizes the importance of explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. This means that the EL curriculum provides students with the necessary skills and strategies to become proficient readers.
Another advantage of the EL curriculum is that it is designed to save teachers time. Teachers can focus on delivering high-quality instruction that is differentiated to the needs of their students. One of the unique features of the EL curriculum is its focus on real-world learning experiences. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of hands-on, project-based learning that integrates reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. It also integrates science and social studies content! This approach not only helps students develop their literacy skills but also prepares them for success in college and career.
Please let me know if you have questions!
Love,
Dr. Angela

Before & After School Reminders
After-School Care through the YMCA Childcare Enrichment Program (onsite at Brown)
Car Rider Tags will be available for pick up at Orientation and the Meet & Greet.
Student drivers may purchase an 10-month parking pass to the Y Garage during Orientation and the Meet & Greet. The 10-month pass is $75 plus a $10 deposit. This serves as a fundraiser for our school and is a great savings for our students as Y Garage monthly parking costs $90 per month.

Family Resource/Youth Services Center Coordinator
I hope everyone is having a great summer! I am back at work and am looking forward to meeting all our new families this year. The FRYSC assists families with support groups, holiday assistance, clothing/food assistance, housing referrals, health services, and after school programming. Just a friendly reminder, that Brown has an on-site food pantry. If anyone needs assistance with food, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am looking forward to working with our families and providing programs for our students and families!
Mental Health Practitioner
My first day back from summer break is August 7th!
High School Counselor
We are so excited to welcome all of our students, new and returning, in August and I am particularly excited for my high school students!
The Class of 2027, who is just beginning their high school journey, was in kindergarten when I began working at Brown in 2014. Those returning from last year have grown together the past 9 years and we look forward to welcoming students that are new to Brown and accepting them as new family.
The Class of 2026 made amazing strides last year and have a year of learning and goal setting (and goal crushing) ahead of them as they evolve as young adults. Sophomore year is rigorous, but I know they are committed to taking advantage of the opportunities that will come their way.
My Juniors, the Class of 2025, will rise to the challenge that is junior year. Many are taking a rigorous course load and they will set their sights on their post-secondary goals with our unique Career Choices class (locally referred to as Junior Seminar) taught by the ever talented and mindful Norah Wakefield.
SENIORS!!!!! You have an amazing year ahead of you as we prepare to launch into your adult life beyond high school. Whatever your chosen path may be, you have the support of our faculty and staff behind you. We are so excited to support you as you are the leaders of our K-12 family and you have so many unique experiences this year while you also have the opportunity to reflect of your time at Brown and leave the legacy of the Class of 2024. We have such high hopes for each of you and cannot wait to see the growth that occurs this next school year!
EVERYONE-Your schedules will be available in early August and a course change request form will be made available that same day. Robin will be in study halls the first week and you have 10 school days to request a change. Please complete the Course Change Request Form to schedule an appointment to make the most efficient use of your time. Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to discuss any possible changes with Norah if they are enrolled in her courses.
Seniors intending to participate in Work Based Learning must submit all required paperwork before they will have their schedule changed to reflect their ability to check out and should not plan on going to work until after 2:40 the first few days of school. Please notify your work sites now for scheduling purposes.
