This project was the first big project of the semester and experimented a limited palette. The color schemes I decided to go with were triad (primary colors), monochromatic (red-violet), analogous (red violet to blue), and complementary (red and green). If I were to do the project again, I would definitely try to make the colors more distinctive to its color scheme. However, I felt I did a good job replicating the values with color.

When I was first introduced with this project, I knew I wanted to depict a story of some sort. I first thought of childhood stories like Alice in Wonderland or the Lorax, but quickly shut that down after I realized it was way to ambitious. In the end, I chose to go with the legend of the Thousand Paper Cranes, where folding a thousand paper cranes would bring good luck. I originally planned to use acetone transfers to recreate the illusion of a thousand paper cranes following the largest one, but it actually lifted the acrylic paint under it. However, I was able to shift gears and make do with using paper cutouts instead.

In practice for the Junior Duck Stamp Competition, our task was to recreate a photo of a Mandarin duck exactly. I feel like my biggest strength in this project was my color matching skills and precision of the shapes. However, if I would do this again, I would want to focus more on the texture of the feathers.

This composition was intended for the Junior Duck Stamp Contest. I chose to stay with Acrylic as my medium because we've focused so much on it this semester and I felt that I was the most comfortable with it when it comes to adding color. One of my biggest successes with this project was being able to create a composition without referencing just one photo. I experimented with a different duck position than the reference image and I painted the background based on a general descriptions of the habitat.
