3rd Grade

Hello to the most amazing, incredible third graders I know!

Okay, so bear with me here.... we're going to be working on two different things: exploring the instruments of the orchestra and STOMP projects. I'll be posting updates below on both of them. Don't forget to scroll down to see both of them! Just do these at your own pace, and reach out if you have any questions or want to share something AWESOME that you learned! joseph.dewinkle@jeffco.k12.co.us or jdewinkl@jeffcoschools.us

Now we get to see all the families in action!

This is a brilliant piece written to show off all the instruments! First each family is highlighted together, then each instruments gets a chance to show off its unique sound! As you watch, the video will guide you through the instruments so you will know what you are listening to.

Enjoy!

But for now, we'll explore the Strings Family this week.

Note: It might be helpful to make it full screen or to use the button in the top right to "pop out" the presentation.

April 13-17

We'll start looking at the different instrument families next week - but don't miss the STOMP project below! There is a big thing for you to work on this week at the bottom of this page.

If you wanted to see some really cool instruments up close - the Musical Instrument Museum (yes, that's a real thing!) in Scottsdale, Arizona, has an online virtual tour. It's on Google Maps. Follow the link below, and you should be able to move around the museum and see all the amazing instruments there! They have a lot of instruments you might recognize - and lots that you have probably never heard of. They come from all over the world! See if you can figure out which family they might belong to :)

March 30 - April 3

Thing 1: Instruments of the Orchestra

Step 1 (from before Spring Break): Now that you can play a wind instrument (your recorder!), it's time to explore all the instruments of the orchestra!

Start here to get an overview of the four families of the orchestra - Strings, Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion.

You can find more information on these three sites as well! One of them gets pretty detailed, but it has some really interesting facts about the instruments.

Also follow the links on this doc for even more ways to explore the orchestra!

Thing 2: STOMP Project

Step 1: STOMP is a group that performs around the world using all sorts of materials that we normally wouldn't consider an "instrument." You'll see what I mean when you watch these videos. To start off, just watch the videos below and keep track of what they use to make music, how they use it, and see if you can tell when a new section starts. I'll be sending out a Google form later this week for you to share your ideas with me - so check back for that :)

***Note - some of you have already seen some STOMP videos, so the idea may be familiar. But, the videos below are different that the ones you've seen (except the last one)! For some of you, these are completely new. Enjoy!

Step 2:

Pretty cool, right?!?!

Now watch this video about how they created STOMP.

["Really, Mr. D?" you might ask. "Another video?!?! I wanna MAKE some music and my parents say its time to get away from the screen!!!"

I know, I know. But... this gives you some insight into how they made the original STOMP because guess what?!... you get to start making your own STOMP-inspired music next week! Start thinking about what you might want to use as your "instruments"!]

April 6-10

Step 3: You're getting so close to making your own STOMP music!

Watch any of these videos for some ideas on how to STOMP using different parts of your bodies and some things you probably have laying around at home!

Watch and play along with any of the videos - explore as many as you want! Keep thinking about how you might create your own STOMP music.

Video 2: Bags

Video 3: Breath Mints

Video 4: Basketballs

April 13 - 17

It's time to create your own STOMP pattern!

FIRST - Watch the video below for instructions!

Click here to find a Google Slides presentation with the instructions. Make a copy of the presentation and create your own pattern

ROCK STAR/BOSS LEVEL - Create a 2nd pattern on the 2nd slide, then repeat your first pattern on the third slide

Then share your Slides presentation with me - jdewinkl@jeffcoschools.us

Practice it - next week your job is to perform it!
