Major Project: Shifting Shelves
Fiction Shifting Report
The fiction books in the SHHS library were spread out over a large area and letters were divided into sections that were far apart from each other. Much of this was a result of renovations and losing shelf space from the Hillside Cafe and soft seating areas. Before beginning I ran a circulation report and weeded books that had not circulated in over 10 years. This made more shelf space available. Other shelves had been made available after the nonfiction shift. I knew I needed to plan for the future and allow more space for new books. After counting the number of shelves being used for fiction books and comparing that to the available shelves I mapped out a plan to place the books on one side of the library. This plan would free up some shelves to use for displays and future passive programming. Once the plan was made and re-checked the library staff began the move. I did not want books out of place for too long and confuse students so I stayed late one day and we were able to get all of the fiction books moved in less than three days.
Reason for the shift: To provide a more cohesive layout of the fiction section
Time: All books were moved in less than three days.
Benefits: Shelves were dusted, old and outdated books were weeded, better access to the fiction books, freed up space for displays as well as new books in the future.
Nonfiction Shifting Report
The layout of the nonfiction books in the SHHS library did not flow in a logical manner, making it difficult for patrons to find what they were looking for. A plan was made to shift the books. I decided that it made sense to have all the nonfiction in one room or area of the library so they were grouped together. To begin we needed to make room on shelves in order to begin the shift. I started by weeding the audio books that get very little use. Then we moved the remaining audio books and reference books into the storage area, freeing up shelves along the wall. I had to have the custodial staff move some of the floor shelves. We dusted all the shelves as they were emptied. After careful thought I decided where the 000s needed to begin and the library staff began moving books to those shelves. We shifted books until all the nonfiction books were located in the same room or area of the library. New signage was placed on the ends of each row. This layout is much more logical and should help patrons find what they need.
Reason for the shift: To provide a more logical layout of the nonfiction section
Time: All books were moved in about one week.
Benefits: Shelves were dusted, old and outdated books were weeded, better access to the nonfiction books
